This is a seriously beautiful book. As a huge book lover, just looking at it and paging through it makes me happy. As you can see from the pictures, it comes with gold dipped pages and a red ribbon book marker. My boyfriend commented that it looks just like a Bible.I attached some photos of the Contents, just in case anyone was wondering what specific stories are included (although I do believe it's supposed to be a complete set--but I don't know Grimm's stories well enough to confirm that).Hope my pics have helped! :)

I don't know if this is unique to the Kindle version, but this edition is truly a travesty.I bought it a while ago and have been reading the stories whenever I get some free time. From the start I had the feeling that these stories were a little "off". The brothers Grimm are known to be somewhat somber, I get that, but they also portray humor and subtle nuances in their writing. However, this English version reads as if it had been stripped of any wit before publication.A few days ago, I finally discovered the main problem: the translation is just awful. I really didn't want to believe it, I truly wanted to think this book was a faithful representation of the original stories, and it was just a case of me not "getting it". Then I read the story titled "Clever Hans" and it was such a bizarre experience, that I had to look up how come it ended the way it did. That's when I discovered this gem, which is illustrative of the problem that affects the whole book. If you go to Wikipedia and read the plot of "Clever Hans", you learn the premise of the tale, how it is supposed to be humorous and the ending should read something like:"And that's how Hans lost his bride."However, after reading this book's version of the tale, it read like a bad story, not humorous at all, and it ended with the line:"Then Grethel became angry, tore herself loose and ran away, and became the bride of Hans."Clearly, the translation went as far as to completely change the meaning of the punchline of the story. Now I know I have been reading a bad imitation of the Grimm brothers work all this time. Nothing left to do but to look for a better rendition of their work.

That's Taschen: its books are worth every (*pretty*) penny.I cannot speak to this translation versus other English ones (note: the cover is not in German as Amazon displays), but there is a Translator's Note at the end. An index, too. And at the beginning, an introduction to Grimms', for the uninitiated.Beautifully presented and told, it is an anthology for all ages to cherish.

It's a nice enough book, but I'm afraid I don't like the translation. The most glaring example is that, in the story of Rapunzel, all that is said to let Rapunzel's hair down is "Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair." I remember as a child reading a second line "that I may climb the golden stair." I have confirmed on Google search that my memory is correct, which means this translation is deficient. I felt like other stories were very dry, sterile. I think this must be because all the stories have less than full translations.I would appreciate it if someone could recommend another version with better translations of the stories. Waiting and ready to order another.

The book came on time & looks exactly as shown. It has many tales I did t realize existed. I bought this to use while writing a report on the gruesome truth behind the tales we love. These are NOT books for children. As an adult I appreciate the original stories. However, there are still fairly watered down from the true original tales. As I was using this in my works cited I found I had to search for more sources seeing how this book wasn’t true originals.

Great book for all the fans of classic fairy tales, me included. The book is of course in Old English grammar, which is grand. And it is printed in the U.K. so you'll see a lot of 'single quotations' rather than "double quotations".The only con is the stories aren't the "original" version per se. The Frog Prince for example turned human again by sleeping in the princess's pillow, but the original version, the prince turns human again after the princess violently throws him against the wall. But I guess it's for the kids to read more so than adults. Still worth getting. I'm still pleased.

The author has a witty way about him so it is a bit funny and you might find it interesting but really it’s just a listing of the author’s favorite places.There seems to be a fairly comprehensive list of festivals. The restaurant list is where maps would be useful. Not knowing a location by just an address, I’d hate to see a listing that sounded absolutely scrumptious only to find that it was on the other side of town. All the listings are presented equally with no rating system of what is best to see and do if you are only in town for a short trip.There is use of Scottish terms and words that aren’t familiar to an American. Most of the time you can guess the meaning, but the book seems to be written primarily for Scots. However, it makes it feel more authentic, as you can hear the accent in the words. I’d use it as a secondary source of information on Glasgow.

Bonny lad Scott C. Docherty lives where he writes - in Glasgow (Glesca to the Scots) - and also practices law. He states his sideline is running the To Ten Glasgow Guide and after reading this bright book it is easy to understand the ranking. He suggests printing parts writing notes to make the guide truly ours.He discusses transportation (funny and instructive notes on the subway, taxis, trains, buses), walking tours, cycling around Glasgow, personalized tours and sightseeing buses (each with a lowdown bit of information and the social implications!). Once he has us moving he discusses the art and history aspects and what not to miss (museums, galleries, cathedrals, art schools etc), festivals - when they are and what they feature, restaurants (with what they serve, their hours of business, their locations and their website and email address), the famous Mackintosh buildings with the Glasgow school of art (the MAC), and the attractions Scott finds most conducive to visitors' interest - Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow University. People's Palace and Winter Gardens, and the spots for hearing music - both classical and pop and every time you touch on the dot com name of one up pops an image and more information - and cinema and theatres,The section on shopping is particularly well done - no time wasted with a lot of brouhaha, just facts. The he comes to the secret gems places that seduce you right off the page. And of course he includes the bars and gives is the style and concept of the good ones.This is a book of usable information, perfectly laid out for instant gratification. Thenk ye! In addition to the receipes, we also get to read a little bit about Jack's personal experience with poverty. It's heartbreaking. It's overwhelming. I read it off and on to remind myself how lucky I am.I've tried a dozen recipes out of this book, and all have been added to our family's regular meal plan (two adults, two kids under 5). Our favorites are the Sunshine Bread, Peach & Chickpea Curry, and of course the Kidney Bean Burgers. The only one we haven't liked is the Lentil Burgers, which turned out quite dry; I'll try again to see if I maybe just added too much flour or maybe I can pack in some more liquid.From an American standpoint, it takes a bit to get used to the different terms and measurements. I'm not accustomed to weighing my flour rather than knowing the number of cups, but as long as you have a scale you're set, and it's much more accurate. I also have nowhere to grow an herb garden where animals won't maul it (indoor or outdoor), so I mostly use dried herbs. Other items are cost-prohibitive due to my location. Jack speaks about using fish bits and streaky bacon, both of which sound like really great deals, but don't exist at the stores I have regular access to. So I make substitutions. That's one thing this book has really taught me - how to just toss things together from a solid pantry of items. We also have power outages during storms, sometimes lasting days. Now I also know how to make a tasty meal from canned (tinned) items!Things I've had to look up: aubergine = eggplant (this one is a bit obvious); sultana = white raisin (I use dark raisins); courgette = zucchini; coriander = cilantro. I haven't figure out if the English mustard is a ground or prepared version.

I have been a follower of Jack Monroe for years thru her blog and was thrilled to see her publishing a book...so much so that I stalked it here on Amazon and waited for 3 weeks of shipping as it was sent over from the UK. Being able to cook well and cheaply AND for 1.5 people has always been the challenge for me and Jack is a breath of sanity in our overfed world. No super ingredients, no cooking for masses and no "lite" anythings, just.good.food.This book is straightforward, simple to use and all the ingredients, save the fish paste, have been easy to get in my small town (8k) supermarket. As I live in the PNW, I just make my own salmon paste and its even better than anything that could be bought tinned! Her soups are divine and her breads perfect and she has, as always, inspired me to take another look at my pantry and be creative with what I have to make a masterful meal.

I am very pleased to finally get a copy of this book. I discovered Jack (like I imagine many people did) last summer when her recipe for "kidney bean, carrot and cumin burgers" appeared in the Guardian. I tried those, mmm...delicious. I look forward to trying other recipes in this book. I like that it encourages experimentation and makes cooking accessible to ordinary people. Well done Jack!

Loved the writing, and I did find it informative in many ways. I had hoped for more 'traditionally English' food recipes and did not find many. But this book is something that is rare, perhaps it is singular in it's design; but it honestly tells you how to stretch your food budget, when you have almost NOTHING in the bank. In that respect, it is not like any cookery book I've read. I would recommend it for that reason alone.

For someone who is slowly getting out of debt and juggling school and freelance work, money is always tight, and not eating is not really an option.Jack's recipes are both simple enough that I can do them in the spare time class leaves me, and tastier than anything I could have bought premade for the same price. I cannot thank her enough for the work that went into this book.Absolutely would recommend.

It's hard to be creative, sometimes, if you're at the bottom, but Jack rose to the top of the heap! It was so uplifting to learn how she stretched and double-stretched her meager resources. I admire her and love her creative food.

Love the book! I'm a "Jack Monroe" groupy so I loved to finally have so many of her recipes and stories in a bound copy! I love her budget minded advice and the creativity she brings to home cooking. Definitely a winner...even if you aren't an Anglophile there's a little something for everyone in here.

Very accessible recipes. The ingredients are easily obtained. The recipes sound tasty. I am looking forward to trying them out.

A book of testimonies by various Baptist leaders, both past and present, on our common faith and heritage. Sadly, Baptists are often known more for our traditions and emotional revivalism than our deep theology, but this book shows there are indeed many biblical, theological, and historical reasons to celebrate being a Baptist. Some great chapters, though the book could probably have been titled, "Why I wish I was Presbyterian, but the Bible's teaching on believer's baptism would not let me."

Great contents and testimonies of Baptists

I found this to be a good read. I liked the editor's choice to draw from fairly diverse group of Baptists (though some larger groups go unrepresented). I thought a couple of segments were outstanding, and couple of segments were uninspiring, and the rest was pretty good. I don't know if I would put this on a must read level, but if you are a Baptist and you want to come into a better understanding of the Baptist family, then this is worth your time and money.-Chris-

This book is not an apologetic for Baptist doctrine and distinctives. Instead, it is a series of short essays from various Baptist persons that amount to nothing more than personal conversion narratives with different doctrinal emphases. The authors do nothing more than state their position. If asked why they hold the position, "because it's clearly taught in Scripture." There is so much repetition in this book and no real argumentation.This book comes of as triumphalistic. It is profoundly unhelpful. On the other hand, it is exactly what it says that it is. If the Baptists are truly facing an identity crises (and they are) then they should (and could) have produced something weightier. How are personal narratives supposed to aide with this crises? Ultimately, Why I am a Baptist does not answer the questions that the reader is asking, it merely gives a few reasons as to why the individual authors are Baptists. The reader doesn't need to know why the writers are Baptist. They need to know why the position is (or isn't) true.

The shipping was prompt, but I wish there had been a little more information about the book. It is about Southern Baptists, which isn't what I was expecting.

Dr. Tom Nettles and Russell D. Moore have edited a wonderful volume on the true glue that holds Baptists together and that is theological conviction. The list of contributers is a veritable "who's who" of Baptist theological conservatives. The contributers span from the U.S. to Wales to Zambia. They reflect the theological diversity that is found among conservative, confessional and committed Baptists. They are pastors, scholars and lay people. The men and women in this volume stand in the tradition of their Baptist forebearers, committed to God's inerrant Word and the doctrines contained therein and willing to suffer for those distinctives they find in the Bible that makes them Baptists. I would implore every Baptist to read this book and rejoice in the true glue of theological conviction that holds us together as Baptists. I would also encourage every non-Baptist to read this volume for an honest understanding of what is at the core of what it means to be a Baptist Christian.

As the editors state in the introduction, this book was written as a right-wing response to Cecil P. Staton, ed., Why I Am a Baptist: Reflections on Being Baptist in the 21st Century (Smyth & Helwys Press, 1999). The former book has some problems since it is dominated by the losing voices (i.e. centrists and progressives)in the Southern Baptist Holy War, c. 1979-1994, and their pain is still evident as they describe finding ways to be Baptist in other Baptist denominations after being betrayed by their home denomination. Other global voices are in that collection, but not enough.But this conservative-fundamentalist response speaks falsely about the earlier volume (e.g., claiming that the contributors have no theological convictions simply because they do not share THEIR convictions) and then narrows the Baptist tradition to "fundamentalist Calvinists who practice the immersion of believers." The actual 400 year global Baptist tradition is far more diverse than that, but no one reading this volume would know it from the contents. Don't waste your money or your time. To find out about real Baptists look elsewhere.

Jack brings the same quality to this Stock Market Wizard edition as his past editions. I disagree with another reviewer who said these interviews were not as good as the interviews in the earlier Market Wizard series. Great interviews, with a new take on how investors succeeded in the 1990s.Although the traders are generally more cautious to not give away their trading methods (unlike Ed Soyka, from the first Market Wizard's books, who disclosed quiet a bit about his method), most of the traders provide some value even if it is not about what method they specifically use. I think the reason the traders are more secretive is because it has increasingly become difficult to keep a static system working as more and more people figure out the same methods. In fact, some of the traders talk about how they are having to adapt and change their trading methods more often. And although some traders say that their trading method has not changed, I think their methods include an adaptable or evolving method.All in all, this series mainly covers successful traders between 1990 to mid 1999. At the end of each interview, Jack includes a follow up interview to see how the traders performed during 2002: part of the significant bear market.I found it helpful to see how the traders changed and evolved from the first two Market Wizard editions. As in the other Market Wizard books, Jack included a great mix of traders such as the college graduate who made millions from nothing, the Harvard graduate who landed a job with a top Wall Street firm, the farmer who overcame the odds and made it, the typical Wall Street trader who thinks he is too important to treat the interview seriously, the woman who made it strictly shorting stocks, and the smart person who started a hedge fund & raised millions before he even knew how to invest (yea, I am serious).In each of these stories, I could not help myself but think how much luck played into some of the traders stories (more so than the other Market Wizard book stories).For example, one of the traders lost almost a million dollars when he wrote naked calls: the trader owed the brokerage $300,000. The young trader told his mother how much money he had lost and his mother just said to keep at it and make it back. The trader said if it was not for his mother telling him to make the money back and her positive attitude about his loss, he would have likely quit. How lucky is that? His mom knew nothing about trading, and most parents would think their son was gambling and discourage such behavior. This trader later went on to make millions.Another example is how a trader took out a mortgage against his home, lost 75%, and then made most of the money back on a lucky trade that almost made up his loss (after he sold, the stock shortly fell over 90%). This trader was unemployed, could not make the mortgage payments coming due, and said he would likely have given up but for the lucky trade. This trader later went on to make millions.In short, great addition to the Market Wizard series. I am glad I did not listen to some of the reviewers who thought otherwise. For me, if nothing else, these interviews showed how traders continually adapt to the ever changing market.

I'm rather new to trading and investing and have not read many books on the subject before so I was afraid going into this that it would be too technical or dry like the intelligent investor, it's not. You get first hand accounts from people that have started young with their sight set very high, some crashed and burned multiple times while others figured it out on the first try. Jack does a good job with the interviews and keeps it exciting for the reader while at the same time getting you inside the head of the person he is interviewing. I'm planning on reading this book every year, there are many important lessons to be learned in this book and I love that you are getting insight into some of the best stock market traders of the past couple decades. This is a must read if you are new to trading stocks!

This, of course, is the 3rd of three Schwager books in what might be called the "Market Wizards Series": Market Wizards, New Market Wizards, and Stock Market Wizards. None of these books is designed per se into giving an investor a completely formula (step 1, 2, 3, 4 etc) package of how to succeed in financial investing. Rather they serve many important broader purposes including giving investors history and perspective, lessons in risk control,the ever changing nature of the markets, etc. etc.In the Stock Market Wizards book, Schwager (on page 293-318 of the paperback) summarizes SIXTY-SIX "Wizard Lessons". This book would be worth several times its price JUST for these lessons alone. Now don't get me wrong. It is important to read ALL THREE BOOKS and THEN read these lessons, and you see "everything coming together" into a unified whole that all financial instrument investors should always bear in mind.All of the individual stories add up to something larger than the sum of the parts (so to speak). A great book. I wish Jack would come out with one of these Wizard books every 5 years or so. I would not even mind if he had a book in which he re-interviewed former wizards, and asked what MORE had they learned in the intervening years

Marilyn completes what the Enneagram starts by showing us how a self-awareness that's rooted in an identity in Christ's love empowers us down our road of transformation. Five stars!
