I liked Al Roker's take on this critical storm in Galveston's history. I had read Eric Larson's book on the same topic and like it as well. But the two are quite different. Being somewhat of a weather geek, I thought the Roker version was much more detailed in its explanation of the actual formation and movement of this incredible hurricane. Being a bit of a political geek as well, I was stunned at the manner in which this storm took everyone in this country by surprise, despite warnings from Cuban Jesuit meteorologists who issued warnings regarding its track and were not just ignored, but eventually were totally cut off from providing further information to the US. The personal stories provided humanity to this book. Altogether, an interesting read.

Often the best told tales are the ones we cannot make up. Al Roker's vivid and harrowing depiction of Galveston's 1900 hurricane is a nightmare made all the more real by its meticulously researched first person accounts. I've always been fascinated by disaster stories and the means we humans choose to meet their inherent challenges. "Into Thin Air" by Jon Krakauer comes to mind. Indeed, you are hiking on that mountain. I also enjoy a history lesson in the telling as well as a liberal dose of meteorology. Al Roker succeeded in enthralling me. I give it 5 stars.

One reviewer here commented that this book seemed largely taken from "Issac's Storm". I have read both books, and I couldn't disagree more. Granted, the Galvasten hurricane was over 100 years ago, so both authors had to rely pretty much on the same historical records, but, other than that, the two books were quite different. I especially enjoyed Roker's clear and precise explanations of how and why certain meteorological instruments work. I always wondered what a barameter really does. Who knew air has weight? Very enjoyable book.

I finished the book in two days I could not put it down. I was captivated by the personal survivor stories as well as information it contained on the early tracking of hurricanes .

Fascinating account of "behind the scenes" of this horrific hurricane and the human error that led to so many fatalities. The arrogance of the national weather bureau's leadership in not heeding Cuba's sophisticated warnings is a shameful chapter in our nation's history. This is an excellent example of government ego coming ahead of sound scientific evidence and the serious consequences. This might be considered a relevant textbook for some of our current leaders to put the greater public need and research ahead of politics and reckless egos. Way to go, Al Roker!

Al Roker, the familiar weatherman and host on Today, writes this book from a meteorologist's point of view. It certainly has lots of stories about all the other people caught in this horrible disaster but I found it very interesting about the "turf" disputes between the U.S. Meteorological Service and the Cuban meteorologists (led by Jesuit priests) who were possibly some of the best meteorologists in the world. A close up look at the natural disaster that killed more people in the US than any other. Thumbs up to Al!

Great exploration of the history, culture, economics, and peoples' lives connected to the Galveston hurricane of 1900. I teach students who are to be earth science teachers and highly recommend this book as a background reference for meteorology. I am amazed at how many lives could have been saved without the arrogance and bigotry and disbelief of the men at the highest level for announcing warnings. But, science has many times had speed bumps to impede progress. Thanks to the author for bringing unsung heroes to light!

I really enjoyed this book and read it over just a few days. The pacing is excellent. It tells an interesting tale of how the science of weather forecasting was developing at the time and also shows how politics can have a negative influence - in this case how the ignoring and blocking of forecasts that correctly predicted that Galveston would be hit by the hurricane (and that the storm did in fact become a strong hurricane) prevented early precautions from being taken and evacuations that could have probably saved many lives. It uses a common technique of selecting several people from different walks of life and illustrates how the storm impacted them.I would have improved this book by having more pictures and showing the photographs that were included in full page spreads. I'd have included a list of the key people mentioned in the book to make for easy reference. I'd also have included some street maps of Galveston before, during and after the storm showing the progress of the storm and where the homes, offices and businesses mentioned were located. A multi-day timeline summary showing things like the location of the storm, the height of the waters, the official weather readings at different hours, arrival of help and so on would make for a nice quick reference.
