Reading all the rave reviews on this page made this an easy purchase, but I was disappointed with what arrived.This thin, outdated catalog is not the kind of quality you would expect for the architectural treasure that is Buffalo. This city achieved fabulous material and spiritual wealth as the focal point of three important socioeconomic events - economic growth as a result of the completion of the Erie Canal, the expansion of the Second Great Awakening, and the expansion of European immigration. Buffalo's rich architecture belies its reputation as a desperately poor, crime-ridden, ugly city. In fact, one can argue (as I do) that it contains the most important ensemble of 19th-century urban architecture in the United States, and its Victorian cityscape is among the best in the world. Buffalo deserves a better book.What you get here is a catalog of landmark structures, chosen and published in 1981. The book is standard AIA format, though it is not an AIA publication. The sites are organized into geographic areas. Some of the 200 featured structures come with a brief descriptive essay, some come with a short descriptive sentence, and a few include no description at all, other than a name and address. The catalog itself is woefully incomplete. All the sites are in downtown, near north or near west sides. The important EAST SIDE, Broadway and Ellicott are almost entirely absent, and essentially dismissed as "troubled areas." That's too bad. People who know Buffalo know what kind of treasures are hiding in these "troubled areas," and they are urgently important to the architectural and cultural history of the city. For example, three conspicuously omitted landmarks are St. Mary of Sorrows Roman Catholic Church (a National Historic Landmark), St. Adalbert's Basilica (the first basilica in the United States), and Canisius College.The photography is also incomplete, with only about half of the entries including one. If there is a photograph, it is of purely pragmatic, stock quality. There's no attempt at artistry, but there are a few interesting interior shots.So, while it's nice to have SOMETHING which represents awesome Buffalo, we need a serious expansion and update of current offerings, particularly with the National Trust for Historic Preservation coming to town in October 2011!This book can be used as a decent walking tour guide for serious cultural tourists, but its relative lack of detail will make its value limited for architectural historians.

This book is a comprehensive review of numerous architectural marvels-- treasures that rarely exist in other US cities. The downtown "skyscrapers" constructed at the turn of the century have endured as a result of the economic downfall of a great city Fortunately, in regard to these works of art, there was no money available to destroy these buildings and replace them with "modern" designs. "Lemons" to some, turned into a very fine visual lemonade! A reminder that things from the past can be truly appreciated today! I've alreaady recommended this book to many.

Its American Indian inspired art deco city hall, perhaps the finest building of its type in the nation is just one of buildings you will find profiled. Reyner Banham ,the editor,was at the time was on the faculty at the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Architecture. His wonderful book about the origins of the modern movement and its ties to Buffalos grain elevators, A Concrete Atlantis could act as a supplement to Buffalo Architecture: A Guide if you are interested in Buffalos industrial buildings as well...

I borrowed this book from the library and found it very helpful so, I put it on my wish list. It was given to me for Christmas and will soon be full of post-it flags. The book is divided into two sections.Part One: The Power of Essential Oils - This is a mini course that really explains what EOs do, how our bodies get the most out of them through absorption or aromatherapy, the proper storage of EOs and getting the best use of the guide book.Part Two: A Guide to Oils - This section starts out with an overview of the best carrier oils. Next it goes into a wonderful full color guide of 100 Essential Oils. All oils are divided into color coded sections depending on their use. These include- Muscle Treats; Skin Enhancers; Easy Breathers; Warming Stimulants; Immune Boasters; Hormone Harmonizers; Nerve Relievers; Digestive Soothers; and Uplifting Aromas. The book concludes with a reference section that includes a glossary, Bibliography, and aromatherapy organizations.As you can tell, I'm very happy with this book. I hope this review helps you in choosing an EO book that works for you.

I purchased this book because it has a lot of various oils from the more popular and easy to find to ones that I had never heard of. It has good info on them such as colors, odors and popular uses for them. I purchased my own copy because I am learning more about using essential oils around the house and in my beauty/health routines. I had originally checked the book out from my local library, but I kept renewing it and rechecking it out so frequently that I figured I should get a copy of my own. I have referenced back to it multiple times and recommend it for anyone learning about essential oils.

this is a fantastic book, sorted by the benefits of each oil. for example-subheading: immune boosters, nerve relievers, etc. detailed descriptions of the oils, the cautions for each one, how they work in the body physically AND emotionally ( I love that part) and there are a couple of recipes for each oil. photos of the plant are also included, Latin names, where they grow, how they are processed. It's small in size, but not in content! I take it with me all over the place.

This book is small in size but the text is easy to read. The images are beautiful and the book is of fantastic quality. I love how in-depth the information is including safety awareness which I feel many books on essential oils leave out. This one has it all. As a beginner I am just learning all the benefits of essential oils and this book will provide me a wealth of information. I highly recommend this book.

This little book is a wealth of information. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in using essential oils. Just like with medications it is important to use essential oils safely. I bought this copy for my mother. This copy is slightly larger than the copy I bought here last year.

Not as helpful as I hoped. Good information on oils but very little instruction on what to do with them. I have ordered to other books and hope they have more information for remedies.

Just a practice test guide, literally the same questions as the 2016 and 2017 varieties, except chapters are shuffled. This will not help you learn, but is a great gauge if you're interested in multiple exams and want to see how much you rememeber.

This is good if you are taking multiple exams. It gives tests and an answer key, but does not explain why the answers are right. You will need other materials to be prepared for the exam. I am taking the macroeconomics test later this summer and am using Khan Academy as a free teaching guide and this as the practice exams.

This guide gives practice tests and answers for all of the available CLEP tests. It does not give any explanation as to why the answers are correct or how to learn the material to prepare for the test. My son and I used it for the Precalculus CLEP exam and found that the practice questions did not reflect the actual test questions. We both passed, but we got more insight on where to focus our studies from the verbal study hint paragraphs before the practice test than from the practice test questions. I recommend using free online resources like mathisfun dot com and even the ACT test prep books instead of this study guide for the Precalculus test. I'm planning to take the Information Systems, Statistics and Calculus tests, too. This study guide helps one to gauge the speed with which he/she can answer test questions and how the questions are worded, but I use other test prep resources, such as the Princeton Review AP exam books and free online websites like Khan Academy to prepare for the exams. It's probably worth buying if you are taking multiple exams, but I wouldn't buy it for one or fewer.

This book is great for preparing to take any CLEP exam. It gives an overview of the exams and provides a full practice test for each of the 33 exams they offer. It's a great guide to gauge where you are at and how much you need to work on. This is written by College Board who also writes the exams. Great for anyone considering taking a CLEP exam and only a fraction of the price here than at College Board's website!

Awesome Study Guide To CLEP out of subjects

This is so helpful. Even if you are taking just a few CLEP tests or a gazillion of them, this is great to have on your side. It will give you a synopsis of what the test is about, run you through a sample test or two, and provide the answers! The tests, of course, are not what they will actually test you on, but they prepare you well for the wording and the difficulty of the test.

This book was very informative for this product. It's really amazing what you can make with the copper crisper basket, and what's even more amazing is the fact that it's easy to use and to clean.The recipes are great and there is a wide-range of them: everything from the basics like chicken wings or tenders to lamb to fish to vegetarian to gluten-free. It covers a lot of basis even marinades, and there's a cool section where you can add some notes whether that is writing down perfect times for specific dishes or creating your own meals!Overall, there's a lot of useful information and recipes, especially for the price. It's a good product!

I found the recipe book worked well. I followed the directions for the fried chicken and it turned out just as in the book. I also found the French Fries would just as good.

I bought it entirely for the fried chicken recipe! I did have to adapt for GF for us, so we use almond flour, etc, and because I felt the book could use more alternative suggestions like that, I took off one star. I was also a bit shocked that the crisper itself doesn't come with the recipes it pictures, which is weird.

As a plus sized woman who has been struggling with her weight for years, I can say I have heard, read, and tried every trick, fad, and diet out there and have become tired of all the copy cats and false information. When I bought this book I was pleasantly surprised by the wealth of unique techniques it provided. I was like, holy cow, something different, something easy, and it might actually work! I have always known that small changes and some effort every day could really help me change my life but this book sorted out the details for me and gave me a better understanding of how to change my life and my health. So, I am going to try it. The book itself was well organized and well written and I will definitely be looking for more books of this nature from author Linda Westwood.

I intend to do this 15 minute body fix exercise regimen since I have a very limited time in doing my physical work-outs. I don't have the luxury of time to go to the gym and this guide might serve the purpose of shedding off some weight and maintain a regular weight. The plan is very easy to follow and the exercise regimen is not at all complicated. I am sure that anybody can simply follow this 15 minute body fix regimen. Additionally, a guide in diet preparation for a healthy eating habit is provided in this book. Also, there are food recipes that are supposedly aimed to establish a healthy lifestyle. This book is just right for me.

There is really a lot packed into this book. Recipes, exercise routines and programs, tips for healthy eating and exercising… Much more than I expected seeing the title of the book. I like how the author took time to wrote detailed instructions for every exercise. That is necessary for every fitness book, but many of them have too short descriptions and you end up searching for videos online. There is no need for that with this book so thumbs up for that.I didn't like the annoying ads for other books that are literally planted every 10-ish pages in the book. They cut up the text and make me mad. I realize that the author has to advertise other books, but come on, put them at the end or the beginning of the book, not like this.Besides that horrible design decision, the book is surprisingly complete fitness and health guide with sound advice and great exercise routines. Recommended.

It is perfect for those who want to do workouts and diet at the same period of time. You will not look for more because this book already has what you need to stay fit and healthy. The workout exercises will definitely give you the shape that you have been always dreaming. The healthy recipes included in this guide are just suitable to help you become slimmer and healthier. Aside from the workout exercises and recipes, you got many things to learn from here. I had a great time reading it and will definitely try it soon!

Glad I got this from the library. Useless, nothing new. It's common sense that lack of sleep affects everything. You don't need to hear about endless studies. Her chapter on what to do and not do is stuff we've already heard. The only benefit of this book is that it's so boring it might just put you to sleep. Just reading the 306 references in the appendixes will boggle your mind and possibly put you to sleep.

It's like someone Googled everything the Internet had to say about sleep and pasted it into a book with minimal editing.There is no filtering in a sense of the quality of studies and science that are referred to in the book. A lot of the author's claimed problems with our modern daily lives that prevent us from sleeping will probably just make you end up more paranoid about losing sleep and as a result have a harder time sleeping.I recommend instead - say goodnight to insomnia by gregg jacobs. An author experienced in the subject and providing higher quality content in less words. Helped change my sleeping habits significantly.Sleep well.

How do I tell you that our society is sleep deprived...let me count the ways. This book was a huge disappointment. I had to skim quickly through the first 198 pages to find the only point I picked up in the book. Use scents, like lavender or orange, on your bedclothes.Eighteen months ago I visited a Marriott and there was an information card on the bedside table, "Arianna Huffington's 8 tips for a better sleep."I got more from that ( and did not see this in the book) than her book. I am going to list so you can save your money.1. Set a cool room temperature.2. No electronic devices starting 30 minutes before bedtime3. No caffeine after 2 p.m.4. Pajamas, nightdresses and even special t-shirts send a sleep-friendly message to your body. If you wear it to the gym, don't wear it to bed.5 Do some light stretching, deep breathing, yoga or meditation to help your body and your mind transition to sleep.6. When reading a book, make it a physical book or an e-reader that does not emit blue light.7. Ease yourself into sleep mode by drinking some caffeine-free tea.8. Before you turn off the lights, write a list of what you are grateful for.These have worked for me. And her book put me to sleep too.

I sleep well even when I go to bed at a decent hour, but that happens about twice a year, and then usually by accident.So. Why would I read Arianna's book? Well, basically, because I had a suspicion that there was something in here that would address my strange relationship to sleep. And what did I find?I've been UNSLEEPING myself to death for over half my life.Well, that certainly got my attention. And now I get more sleep...I actively drag my unwilling self off to bed MUCH earlier than I have for the last several decades of my life. And yes, it makes a huge difference. I'm still a night owl, and ideally, I get my 9 hours by sleeping in (at least according to my early-bird family members), but this book has (excuse the pun) woken me up as to the devastating long-term damage that can happen through consistent lack of sleep.And it was even more horrifying to me since I don't fit the pattern of the usual causes of sleep-loss: I don't have a smart phone, am not checking the computer late at night, do not suffer from insomnia or other cannot-fall-asleep situations, and yet, here I was getting far too little sleep.There were some chapters less - ahem - riveting than others...the ones on our culture of over-work/too much device interaction are relevant for a lot of people, just not for me. The chapters on how the brain uses sleep to chemically function, repair itself and regenerate were my favourites (and the most acutely uncomfortable for me to read, based on my situation).I never thought this book would tell me how to get to sleep - and it's NOT a HOW-TO SELF-HELP book - but this read certainly got my attention and got me to drag my head to the pillow! Sleep now or die.

I thought it would've been more practical than theoritcal. If you're conducting a research on sleep, this is a great source of sources, since Arianna really went in depth in investigations around the world and proves her point that sleep is important....over....and over....and over again. Honestly, I would've read a wikipedia article for it....thought it would be more practical with far more tips, strategies and techniques, and though you can get those from the book, it's not stated properly.....oh well! one more to the bookshelf.

I thought it was actually a lot of fluff. A lot about the history and story of sleep which I didn't find interesting at all. The amount of information about how to sleep better was very thin. I can't recommend this book. There are a lot of better, more informative books out there. Sorry Arianna.

I'll definitely would enjoy reading it again. I'll buy another copy to give to my friend's daughter. Again, I can't tell you how delighted I am with the whole thing. Her awesomely supportive family, the whole idea of how she followed Betty's 1950's book to the letter (vaseline on the eyelids and wearing panty girdles! Who knew they still even made panty girdles!), and Maya's utter bravery. Wow. I could not have done that at her age. I'm not sure I could do it now. What I didn't realize when I first heard about the book is that she told no one that's what she was doing, following the advice of this 1950's book. No one except her family knew, not even her best friend Kenzie. Where it REALLY got me was the month of April's theme: "A Popular Attitude". And then everything starts tying together. It's a wonderful lesson for anyone at any age. No spoilers here (that's a pet peeve of mine) but you will NOT be disappointed. I am so thrilled for Maya. It was a wonderful read. And such a satisfying ending. There's not one little thing I didn't adore. Can't wait for the movie. Also, kudus go out to whoever designed and illustrated the book cover. Love. Love. Love.

My 11yo 6th grader is an avid reader. Here is her review:--- "Maya is an unpopular girl finishing her 8th grade year with an interesting experiment. She is reading "Betty Cornell's Teenage Popularity Guide", a book from the 1950s. She's hoping the experiment will help her find confidence and discover the true meaning of popularity. As a middle-schooler myself this was a fun book and it teaches some important lessons. Some of the things she does are so funny, especially compared to how we are now. It is emotional and was written very well, I felt like I could relate to Maya. It remind me of a realistic Dork Diaries, with Maya's honesty and silliness. I think it is a great book for all Middle School girls to read!"

I’m not sure what I was expecting when I started reading this book, but it wasn’t this. I liked that Maya’s personality was entirely present, and that we were able to learn so much about her simply by learning of her decision to start the experiment. I liked her family, and a few of the other characters, and I liked that that we had interactions and scenes that didn’t seem to relate with the experiment, but in the end they all were part of Maya’s final realizations. The story felt a little repetitive at times, and I had this feeling from the writing that I was reading a fictionalized version of what happened, even though deep down I know I wasn’t. So maybe that’s really a positive thing. But overall it was simply a good book, and I’m glad I read it.

I rarely give a book 5 stars, so when I do it must be good. Popular by Maya van Wagenen was like a non- annoying reality tv series- it had a diverse amount of emotions and the people could be seen changing over time. The one thing I disliked, however ,was that it had that often used, changed mindset ending. At the end, Maya says she now knows that popularity isn't" clothes, hair, or even possessions. When we let go of these labels we see how flimsy and relative they actually are. Real popularity is kindness and acceptance. It is about who you are, and how you treat others." That was a beautiful set of sentences, but I'm sorry that's just not how it works, as much as we like to believe it is. In my school especially, an I'm sure in other schools, the popular people AREN'T nice and DO have fancy possessions. In the end, I applaud Maya's willingness to try this insane experience and open herself up to new things, because it's extremely hard. "Popular" is a book that resonates with so many people going through the unfair popularity trials of MS , including myself. Her humorous wit also made me connect to her even more, and made the book enjoyable to read. I would recommend this book for anyone in middle school/ early HS, especially someone going through the whole "why does it seem like nobody likes me" and " Why does popularity seem based on such fickle things" phase. A great, non fiction, easy to connect to, book."This is the time to remember that I'm the protagonist in my own story, facing every challenge with grace and wit."

I liked Maya's style of writing and thought she was a pretty talented and ambitious young woman. I related with her story quite a lot. The part where she writes on the bathroom wall, "remember the girl in pearls" I thought was a little self-absorbed though. Sure she made outcasts feel more involved and worked hard at getting to know all kinds of people and that is definitely brave. It's just her friend wrote, "So and So BFFE" and she writes, "Remember ME"…kind of put me off. I feel bad though, Maya is young and I know she didn't mean it like that and I am possibly thinking out of line but still. The things Maya did do was ambitious and inspiring and I thought it was very neat that a 13 year old would be thinking of a writing career already. Her relationship with her writing teacher was also very special and I really liked her family dynamic. I was definitely not as brave as her when I was 13! All in all it was an entertaining read and I look forward to reading more from Ms. Van Wagenen

This is a great book that is inspirational, for younger and older women, the thoughts behind the comparison of how women are displayed as sexual objects and do not have an place to have an opinion without judgement. The author also give her personal experience that make the reader understand why she is so passionate about her work. Great Job !! I recommend that High Schools and Collages around the country to read this book as a part of the curriculum!!

The newest, thought provoking and powerful womanist/feminist religious book. Tamura brings out the real truth about gender, race and sexuality in the african and african-American church. Mind you, you need a dictionary beside you whilst you read!
