Analytical Lexicon to the Septuagint (English and Greek Edition)

From the Back Cover

The Septuagint--the ancient Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible--was an influential translation for Jews and Christians of the first century. When the New Testament writers quoted the Old Testament, they most often used the Septuagint (abbreviated LXX) translation. Thus the vocabulary and thought forms of the LXX had a significant impact on the development of New Testament theology. Although the LXX and the New Testament were both written in Koiné Greek, much of their vocabulary and word forms are different. Thus students and scholars who desire to read the LXX need a reliable reference guide that will help them decode the host of word forms and meanings that go beyond New Testament Greek. The Analytical Lexicon to the Septuagint lists alphabetically every Greek word form found in the standard Rahlfs LXX text, along with a detailed parsing of each form. Besides correcting errors found in the previous (1994) edition, this expanded edition also includes basic glosses (definitions) for each Greek word from Greek-English Lexicon of the Septuagint, compiled by Johan Lust, Erik Eynikel, and Katrin Hauspie. These glosses are translation equivalents rather than technical definitions, and provide literal meanings as well as metaphorical ones. In many cases, the glosses are accompanied by grammatical and contextual information that sheds additional light on the word's meaning. The combination of the exhaustive grammatical analysis of the Analytical Lexicon and the helpful glosses of the Greek-English Lexicon make this expanded edition an indispensible tool for everyone engaged in the study of the Septuagint.

ABOUT MEI am an amateur enthusiast for the Greek New Testament, starting to dabble in the Septuagint.I would classify my Greek expertise as basic++, intermediate--. So I am coming to the LXX from a Koine background rather than a classical. I suspect many readers are in a similar position.MY REVIEWHaving owned a Septuagint for several years, I decided I should really start to read it. I started with the Psalms. It was torture. There are no reading aids for the LXX – no LXX equivalents of A Grammatical Analysis of the Greek New Testament and similar helps. I had my Trenchard The Complete Vocabulary Guide to the Greek New Testament, BAGD A Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament and Other Early Christian Literature, 3rd Edition, my Hatch and Redpath A Concordance to the Septuagint: And the Other Greek Versions of the Old Testament (Including the Apocryphal Books) (Greek Edition)and my Chamberlain The Greek of the Septuagint: A Supplemental Lexicon. But it would take me 10 minutes to parse a single short verse from a Psalm. The vocabulary and language of the LXX is of course much wider than that of the GNT. Ages were spent trying to track [irregular] verbal forms in the text back to their lexical forms. There is a primitive-but-useful WEB site for LXX studies that will provide on-line parsing which is good if you have a computer and internet handy http://www.septuagint.org/LXX/?ac=1 but otherwise it was an exercise in frustration.Morale, energy, and enthusiasm quickly flagged. There has to be a better way. And in browsing Amazon, I came across Bernard Taylor’s Analytical Lexicon to the Septuagint. It is still no substitute for a verse-by-verse grammar and parsing guide but it has vastly improved my LXX experience! The ALS very helpfully lists all words as they appear in the LXX (Rahlfs edition), in (Greek!) alphabetical order. The second column for the word form will provide useful parsing information. The third lists its lexical form. For groups of words appearing together and sharing the same lexical form, the first entry lists the lexical form and the rest are tagged “i.d.” (identical). When you look up the lexical form, it is in bolded text and listed with an English translation “gloss”. You will not find in this volume detailed word usages that you would find in e.g. BAGD but it provides you with sufficient detail either to continue your reading, or of course you may then cross-reference the word in other more detailed lexica. So whatever weird form of word you encounter in the LXX, a couple of look-ups in the ALS will get you out of jail! I have largely put away all my other aids for trying to read the LXX. Pending better solutions, the ALS is now my standard aid. This book was absolutely worth the money and is highly recommended for the non-specialist Koine reader who is trying to make sense of the LXX.

When I bought this book, I thought may be this is a waste of my money, because of I have one classic Greek dictionary and a New Testament Greek concise dictionary, Why I need one more? But, after to read what is really an Analytical Lexicon, I took the risk and I bought this one. I read all reviews about this book, sometimes I could read this is "Excellent", in others this is "a waste", but I had to proof what is the reality. When I received it, this one seemed to me very small to be a Septuagint's dictionary, I had read others in the Internet, bigger than Taylor's ones. Then I opened my copy of Rahlfs' Septuagint, in aleatory page, that was the Psalm 119:7 ... "otan elaloun autois, epolemoun me dorean", with my other dictionary, it takes me very time to find the roots of the words, tense of the verbs and cases of the nouns and adjectives, the translation was a long process from half to one or more hours, very tedious to me. With Taylor's Lexicon you quickly can find "otan" --> when, "elaloun" is imperfect form 3rd person of "laleo": to say or to speak, this means then: he talked; "autois" --> to them, because this is dative form of "autos": they, "epolemoun" -> 3rd person plural of imperfect, this is past of "polemo": fight, this means then: they fought; me = as English, accusative form of I, this means me; and the last word "dorean" --> adverb of "doreas" (gift) that's means: without any reason. In a minute or less, I could translate a small sentences; that normally takes me five or more minutes while I search roots in my normal dictionary or in the web.Really for the Septuagint studies Taylor's Lexicon is an invaluable tool you must to have, of course, I recommend you to buy a classical Greek dictionary or a new testament Greek dictionary too, for complement. This dictionary is not a word-to-word correspondence of meanings, this really indicates you the morphological analysis and the references to the root, after you find the root and the possible meaning in the text, you use your grammar knowledge to translate sentences. So, this is not beginners' dictionary, you need to have some knowledge of grammar, specially terminology and equivalences in your tongue, more or less 10 lesson in any ancient Greek grammar and verbs tense names and meaning will be enough, I think.About the Expanded Edition, paper is white and fonts very readable, hardcover is printed in elegant design. Some words comes with Hebrew version, but this hasn't diacritics accent, then if you don't know how read Hebrew that will be useless, but you can use it for future reference. Paper is very high quality and printed page very nice, you also can use a lens to magnify the words when you need it.You like Koine Greek of Septuagint, you have studied some of grammar of Greek, you need a quick reference of the word and you don't want to waste time seeking morphology of a word to translate it, this is the book you are searching.

This Lexicon (expanded edition) is excellent. The Lexicon (hardbound) is extreemely easy to use and the words can be found quickly. It not only explains you the grammatical form of every single word in the Septuagint, but it also applies you with a translation of all the lexical forms (and that, essentially, means every single word in the Septuagint). As in every other dictionary, not every inflected word is translated here, but only the lexical form of the word. In using the Lexicon one has to be aware of one thing: the Lexical words in Old and New Testament Greek change very often quite drastically when inflected, so when looking up such an inflected word in the Lexicon, the Lexical word, which you find, might come out so differently, that you have to find the translation under another letter in the Lexicon. To use this Lexicon with succes, it`s highly recommended to read the short introduction carefully. Another excellent work for understanding the Septuagint is The Apostolic Bible (Polyglot) Greek-English Interlinear by Charles Van der Pool. It`s a word for word translation over each single Greek word, also with an Analytical Lexicon and comes both in bookform and on a CD. Still a student in Old Testament Greek.

Again only one translation per word, when there are multiple possibilities on some words.

Returning to reading the Septuagint after about 30 years, my Greek is really rusty. Liddell & Scott is hard to use, Bauer incomplete vis-a-vis LXX. This new Analytical Lexicon to the Septuagint is the perfect reference - concise, accurate and readable. I have found it extremely useful. And thanks to the Deutsche Bibelgesellschaft, what a bargain!
