Cost and Choice is a short, easy, and informative read on opportunity cost. Some of the classical economists hinted at the idea of opportunity cost. Opportunity cost thinking can be seen in the work of Ricardo and Bastiat. Yet the labor cost doctrine held its sway over economic thinking until Carl Menger demolished it. Menger's student Weiser developed the idea of alternative costs, but how did this idea get to England?Buchanan describes the development of the `London tradition' at the LSE. Thirlby, Coase, Hayek, and Robbins were all involved in developing the modern opportunity cost doctrine. Buchanan also inquires into the idea of social costs and public choice. The idea of opportunity cost is, of course, at the center of the socialist calculation debate. The opportunity cost concept raises a number of issues as far as the Coase theorem and public goods theory are concerned. Who chooses over what alternatives in the public sector?Cost and Choice is a great book to use in undergraduate microeconomics. Some grad students should read it too: especially those who majored in engineering or one of the physical sciences as undergrads. It is also a worthwhile read for the educated public.

Brilliant thinking and well written

I am not an economist, but do have a masters degree in political science. As such, I am relatively familiar with cost theory in economics and reasonably familiar with the "Austrian school" of economics's subjective theory of value/cost. Even though I am not an economist, I found this book (except for the final two chapters) quite clearly written and explained. Buchanan certainly isn't writing for a popular audience (and it is not a popular subject), but his writing was easy enough for me to understand without a full-on econ background.As others mention, this book explains and expands on the subjective theory of costs. Simply stated, economists of the classical sort liked to think of 'cost' and 'value' in objective terms - 'cost' referring to the measurable expenditure. Thus, the opportunity cost for buying a candy bar is simply all of the other financial options the buyer forgoes in spending that money here, rather than another place.Buchanan's book first recaps the history of thinking about cost and the gradual emergence of a subjective theory of cost. Under the subjective theory that Buchanan endorses, cost means basically any opportunity that buyer anticipates giving up for sake of the choice being made. In other words, instead of the cost of a candy bar being limited to anything else the buyer could have bought for the price, it can also include such things as the anticipated disappointment when one weighs oneself the following morning or the dissatisfaction that comes with knowing that one broke their diet. So as not to sound frivolous, the reason these are actual costs is because, in a very real way, they are things the chooser considers when making their choice. As the very word 'choice' implies that there is a weighing of pros and cons, any 'cons' that the chooser anticipates are opportunity costs.As other reviewers mention, I am not sure how necessary the last two chapters were. They are quite hard to follow and seemed more suited to a separate essay where themes from this book are put into practical contexts.All in all, Cost and Choice gave me a lot to think about. Buchanan is a good explainer and arguer and provides a very rich history of the evolution of "opportunity cost" as a concept. Good book for those interested in the subjective theory of cost and the microeconomic idea of opportunity cost in general.

The word "cost" means something different in a context of making a choice than it does in a context of budgeting or in a context of accounting. Buchanan argues that within the context of making a choice, orthodox economics employs an inaccurate meaning of the word cost. This book is an attempt to develop the correct meaning of the concept of cost within a context of choice.Buchanan defines cost as "that which the decision-taker sacrifices or gives up when he makes a choice. It consists in his own evaluation of the enjoyment or utility that he anticipates having to forego as a result of selection among alternative courses of action" (p. 41).Buchanan's notion of cost within a setting of choice is one of opportunity cost. His argument builds on the concept of cost developed in Austrian economics (Carl Menger, E. Böhm-Bawerk, F. von Wieser), and even more so by scholars at the London School of Economics (Lionel Robbins, Friedrich A. von Hayek, Ronald Coase during the 1930s, G.F. Thirlby and Jack Wiseman during the 1950s). It differs from the notion of cost of classical economists (Adam Smith, David Ricardo, Thomas Malthus) in two main ways.* In classical and neoclassical economics, cost is based on units of resource input during the production process (ch. 1). The value of goods in exchange is then determined by the relative costs of their production (Adam Smith' famous example that a beaver should fetch twice as much in the market as a deer, because it costs twice as much labor to kill a beaver as it costs to kill a deer). Buchanan, on the other hand, defines cost as that given up when making a choice. He prefers marginal-utility economics (cf. William Stanley Jevons, Carl Menger, Leon Walras), according to which exchange value is determined by marginal utility, or demand.* In classical economics, cost can be objectively measured. Under the Austrian-London-Buchanan concept of cost, on the other hand, cost is subjective, in that it is different for each decision maker (p. 23). "In an unchanging economic environment populated by purely economic men, the two approaches become identical in a superficial sense. In a universe where all behavior is not purely economic, where genuine choice takes place, the important differences emerge with clarity." (p. 25)Thus, "[i]n a theory of choice, cost must be reckoned in a utility dimension. In the orthodox predictive theory, however, cost is reckoned in a commodity dimension." (p. 41)Short as the book is, it could have been even shorter. Lots of the second half is barely interesting (ch. 4-6, which are applications of Buchanan's cost theory to, respectively, public finance, Pigovian welfare norms, and nonmarket decision-making; sounds promising but it simply gets too tedious). This would have worked better in a shorter, long paper-length version.

oso polar, oso polar, que es ese rudio by bill martin was great! was a great book for my niece who is learning how to read. had a lot of fun pictures and was easy to understand. my niece liked the pictures and pretends to read the book when im not reading it to her which is very cute! all in all it was a good purchase and i would recommend it to anyone looking for a Spanish book for children. What sound does a flamingo make? Can you imitate a peacock? Had to look both ....Quality is good but baby and I just don't like it as much as Spanish version of Brown Bear, Brown Bear (Oso Pardo, Oso Pardo) and doesn't seem to flow as easily. Baby does laugh at my attempts to make noises, though. Agree with another reviewer that growling used again is a distraction. Baby loses interest in this book too easily, possibly because she is a fan of largest colorful animals out there. The flamingo and peacock just don't interest her at this age: 11 mos. Book is well done but if you must choose one of the the two Eric Carle books translated in Spanish (checked Eric Carle website February 2014), get Oso Pardo.

Great book. All Eric Carle books are great. And this translation is actually really good. A good read, and a very good bunch of verbs and expressions to learn what the different animals say, it is good.

Purchased this for a baby shower gift. Quality was good and the book was sturdy.

My 1 year old loves

My son is in a dual language Spanish immersion program. He loves this story so much I bought it for home. He can read it himself and he is only in kindergarten. The colors are bright and we love the hardback design. This book is a great size for him.

Eric Carle and Bill Martin are amazing!!! My 18mo loves their books! We have all of them and cannot get enough of them. I have them all memorized because my LO makes me read them so much! Highy recommended

I love Marjorie Sarnat's talent and have a few of her coloring books and enjoy them. I pre-ordered this book as I know it would be a beautiful one and it didn't disappoint me. There are so many different angels with beautiful faces and scenes.I love them all. The paper is nice and single sided, just like all of Creative Haven's coloring book papers, although I still used a cardstock behind the page I colored when I used alcohol markers.

Beautifully illustrated coloring book. These are some of the most gorgeous angels I've seen. As with all of the Creative Haven coloring books, the pages are printed clearly on single sided, perforated quality paper. Plus, the price was great.

Creative Haven is a great company that produces beautiful books! I personally am not a fan of Marjorie sarnat because I feel her images are repetitive with the same elements. However! However! This one is filled with angels and not her typical pets. The angels have beautiful faces, beautiful wings and beautiful surroundings! I'm very happy that I purchased this and I'm looking forward to her fairies book much later in the year. Creative Haven has one sided prints that are perforated for easy removal. The paper is a medium weight, a little bit thicker than copy paper but it takes the pencil nice and evenly and you can layer with it.

I get emails from Dover Publications to check out sample pages and after seeing the ones for Beautiful Angels knew that I would enjoy coloring in this book. I have a couple of other books by Marjorie Sarnat and love all the drawings. The angels in this book are beautiful and graceful. Some drawings are a little more detailed than others but not overly so. The paper in the book works well with both markers and pencils. Markers will bleed through so keep something behind your page while coloring.

I am rather new to Marjorie Sarnat's books. I have to say they are impressive. The angels in this book are just strikingly depicted. There is so much detail and beauty you want to color every page.The books have create space paper. I find 3 layers or perhaps 4 are all you can get from this paper, but a light touch really works wonders. I have included a picture of mine which really got a lot of comments, even from Marjorie.I recommend this book, if you love angels, you will love the pictures in here.

This book by Marjorie Sarnat is another beautiful book. She is very talented. I have almost all of her books and have preordered another one. Hope she keeps them coming. They are a lot of fun to color in. Very relaxing and this particular one is soooo pretty. I love it!!

Another super beautiful book from Marjorie! I always pre-order her books so that I get them as soon as they are released! I love her beautifully drawn Angels....they are soooooo Heavenly!!!!

As usual, Marjorie's drawings in this book are quite detailed and clearly drawn. I have completed several of the pictures and didn't have to ask myself what any of the details were supposed to represent. The paper is medium weight and bright white. I used Prismacolors to complete the pictures and the colors blended easily on this paper. I definitely recommend this book!Update 1/6/2019: I forgot to mention in my original review that OMS has a tendency to smear the black lines of the original drawing, and is noticeable in the areas where you are usung lighter colors. I believe this is a given for any of the Creative Haven books. If you normally use OMS to blend your colored pencils this can be a problem. I recommend using a blender stick instead.

Great book by Dr. Ethan Siegel. I bought this after reading an article written by him regarding point of reference and relative motion. This book is a great discussion on the feasibility of the technology portrayed in Star Trek as well as what steps have been made toward many of them. Ethan Seigel is one of the best popularizers of Astronomy and Cosmology. His column "Starts With a Bang" is great. He is a Trekkie, and fills this book with arcane knowledge of Star Trek, real science and where they coincide or diverge. He writes well, clearly without losing the basis of complex theories. Highly recommended

Very interesting book about the tech of Star Trek and what has already been developed and what is being developed in the near future. It's amazing how much presented in Star Trek back in 1966 is either already with us or is close to coming into being.

These were remarkable achievements requiring a considerable level of engineering sophistication and have a place in the contemporary story of astronautics. Recent landings on Mars use, essentially, the very techniques developed by Russia to land on and explore the moon in the 1960s and 1970s. As an acknowledged expert and author of several books on the Soviet and Russian space programme, Brian Harvey is ideally suited to cover not only the engineering and scientific side but also the human stories of the Soviet and Russian lunar programme. These include those of the cosmonaut squad that trained to land on the moon, but was stood down, and of the designers who tried to realise the dream of a Russian moon, from Tikhonravov to Mishin: a Soviet lunar programme was first proposed by designer Mikhail Tikhonravov in a children’s magazine in 1951 and he persuaded a sceptical Soviet leadership of the value of a moon programme. More than thirty years after University of Manchester astronomy professor Zdenek Kopal wrote, "In contrast to the American soft-landers, on which the design of experiments as well as their preliminary results have been fully published, much less is known on the instrumentation of the [Soviet] soft-landing Lunas - and still less about their results," we finally have Soviet and Russian Lunar Exploration by Brian Harvey. This book supplies some of the long-absent information for which Kopal and many others yearned. After reading it, one will certainly have a much more thorough understanding and appreciation of the Soviet lunar program's flyby spacecraft, soft-landers, orbiters, rovers, sample return missions, their planned manned lunar missions, and the personalities behind them.To reach that point, however, this reviewer had to endure a few of author Harvey's biased comments, scattered throughout the book, which almost caused him to doubt that it was Neil Armstrong who first placed his boot print on the lunar surface and not Alexei Leonov. Harvey attempts to counteract the U.S. dominance present in most books about lunar exploration with his comments and asides. While one can understand his desire to defend Soviet performance, this reviewer believes that he occasionally overcompensates to the point of being annoying, and, in one instant ... ludicrous. The reader can decide for himself or herself the validity of the author's statement, "The Soviet Union ... came close to perfecting a giant moon rocket, the N-1," especially after reading later in the book that four N-1s were launched over a 3-1/2 year period and each experienced a failure that destroyed the three-stage vehicle before it even reached second stage ignition. At least the N-1 launch escape system worked properly!The only other gripe this reviewer had was with the inconsistency of the photo quality included with the text. Some are muddy, others are highly pixilated, and at least two had moiré patterns, while some are razor sharp. It would have been a real plus if the author could have included clear, sharp photos of the lunar panoramas taken by Soviet soft-landers, rovers, and sample-return missions.None-the-less, author Brian Harvey has done a yeoman's job of assembling material about a series of essentially secret programs run by a foreign country whose government was not known for being forthcoming with detailed information about successes, let alone failures.The bottom line is that this is a valuable book for anyone who is interested in a comprehensive review of Soviet lunar exploration. And if the reader believes that he or she might know a lot about the Soviet space program (as did this reviewer) before reading the book, they will be surprised how little they actually knew after finishing it. Perhaps the greatest asset of this book is that it crystallizes how close the U.S. and Soviet Union were in the "race to the moon," and yet how far apart they were.

Once again a "Harvey book" which fulfills the expectations one has come to expect when looking at the by-line. This time the theme is the stamina and heroics you had to exhibit in Soviet Russia when planning and trying to win the race to the Moon. We all know that the Soviets started out by winning the initial laps but finally lost the finals in the Race, here we get to know why. We re-live the tragedies of the main protagonists, who not only had to master a demanding complex of technology, but also had to appease and cajole a not very understanding but very capricious bureaucracy in order to further their aims. Their case was not helped by the internal dissensions and jockeying for position. Well, the US administrations and Congress did show it's inconsistency of purpose, but at any rate, they allowed NASA to win before withdrawing the support. The difficulties to be faced in the Soviet Union was of quite an other order of magnitude. S.P.Koroljov, N. Tichonravov and the other enthusiasts had their successes, but ultimately they had to concede failure and defeat. That was not, however because of lack of trying. The background vas elucidated for the historians a decade ago by A Siddiqi, now Brian Harvey tells the story to us, an audience of interested laymen. As usually the style is clear, the exposition masterful. Even as most of us readers know the outcome, the drama unfolds with breathless suspense. I myself have lived through those years as an active observer, and still did not put down the book until arriving at the last page.

A very interesting look at how the Soviets and the Russian people and scientists tried to do something using what they already had, while also developing equipment that could and did bring home knowledge of another world.

How is it that I've heard so little about this book? It's an absolute gem considering it has so many details about the Soviet lunar unmanned and manned program. It tells about it's initially successful unmanned lunar program with Luna 2 crashing on the moon and Luna 3 photographing the far side of our moon. And then about the no less than nine(!) consecutive failures after that.It then goes on about the proposed manned lunar program and why that failed (too many moon rockets) and how close the Soviets came to an Apollo 8 like flight (they could have been first!). Of course there are many details about the N-1 rocket, like how debris flew 10 km's from the explosion.And there are stories, like the one of cosmonaut Boris Volynov on Soyuz-5, who broke several teeth on a very rough landing, managed to drag himself out the capsule in a -38 degree celsius Kazakh steppe, was rescued and then almost got shot at the celebrations, because of a murder attempt on Brezhnev.

This is an extensively researched book about the life of Hernando Colon, son of Christopher Columbus, and the Biblioteca Colombina he created in 1539. Prior to his death Hernando collected between 10,000 and 20,000 items for his library, including over 3000 books. His library was organized using a system he created for it and was the first library to use bookshelves where the books were shelved vertically. He collected any paper object that struck his fancy, including playing cards and lyrics to songs.This was a fascinating read about one man’s bibliomania and his desire to collect every book on every subject. It is well written and doesn’t get overly bogged down in the author’s research.

Intriguing history

I now have a special place in my heart for Hernando Colón. His collections and organizational systems are totally mind-boggling and absolutely fascinating. As a "natural son" (not the product of a legitimate union) Colón could "win legitimacy only by showing himself to be his father's son in spirit." Colón strove to achieve this distinction by accumulating massive amounts of written works, printed images, music, and plants to create a collection that would far surpass any other collection of its time. Colón also kept meticulous details in multiple ledgers and created complex organizational systems. This book dives into some of Colón's collections, examines particular items in the collection, offers insight into why some items were especially important to Colón and analyzes why some were never discussed by the collector.This book is very dense and I wouldn't recommend it to the average book lover but if you're ready to go on a deep dig then this is the book for you!

I was intrigued--Columbus had a son who created the world's greatest library? Why hadn't we heard about him? What happened to all the books? How did he even embark on such a quest? I had to read this book.Hernando may have been an illegitimate son but in 1502 his father Christopher Columbus took the thirteen-year-old along on his fourth voyage to the New World. Hernando started his life familiar with lands and cultures that most of the world didn't even know existed.The book recounts Columbus's discoveries and his struggle to maintain his status and share of New World wealth for his heirs.The Admiral of the Ocean reigned as the greatest explorer for only a short time before he was dethroned. He became old news as successive explorers stole attention and acclaim. Spain sought to discredit Columbus as the first to discover the New World, desirous of keeping all the New World wealth. Hernando determined to return and solidify his father's status by writing a book about his father's life--essentially the first biography.The other part of the book is Hernando's thirst for knowledge, his obsession with collecting books of every kind, in every language--even if he couldn't read them. He collected prints and maps and art and ephemera gleaned from small booksellers.He kept lists of his books and when he lost over a thousand books in a shipwreck he knew which ones he needed to replace. He developed methods to catalog and organize the books and to retrieve the information in the books.Hernando was called upon to create a definitive map of the New World so that Spain and Portugal could finalize their territorial rights. He began an exhaustive dictionary but abandoned it knowing he could never finish it.As he traveled across Europe, Hernando came into contact with all the great thinkers whose ideas were rocking the world: Erasmus, Luther, Rabelais, Thomas More. During Hernando's lifetime, Henry was looking to divorce Catherine, Suleiman was conquering the Eastern reaches of Europe, and the Holy Roman Emperor was crowned as the head of church and state. Luther's teaching had fueled the Peasant's Revolt and the anti-authoritarian Anabaptist movement arose.In his later life, Hernando settled down and built his house and perfected his library. His garden was an arboretum containing plants and trees from across the world.Hernando's achievement was remarkable. His goal to order all human knowledge for accessible retrieval was monumental. Edward Wilson-Lee has chosen to gift readers with the story of Hernando Colon, the illegitimate son of Christopher Columbus. This book is so much more than just Hernando's story. It is also the story of what happened to Christopher Columbus after the voyage we all learned about in school. Hernando accompanied Columbus on several voyages, and wrote a biography of his father. Hernando had a mission to create a fantastic library (he succeeded in 1539).I found the book a slow read, but so worthwhile. I appreciated this addition to history and the complexity of Hernando's life and travels. Mr. Wilson reveals the secrets of the amazing library Hernando set out to gather. Colon was a true adventurer, and the story of his life is interwoven with the tales of fantastic books, their subjects and authors, as well as music, plants and artifacts. The bibliophile in me is in awe of the collection, between 10 and 20,000 books all carefully documented - so beneficial when he lost over 1,00 in a shipwreck, he had a list of what to replace!The Catalogue of Shipwrecked Books is by no means an easy read. There is a wealth of information, and I found it easiest to absorb in small sections. This would make an excellent book discussion selection, as there are so many avenues to explore and discuss.I received my copy through NetGalley and am under no obligation to the publisher.
