Review

"Hay's deeply interesting book is a splendid alchemy of detailed academic political science." The Guardian "This is, without reservation, a powerful, ambitious and provocative text that is destined to become a classic book in the field of political science." Matthew Flinders, British Politics "A fascinating and well-written account which seeks to illuminate, and then diagnose, the problem of declining political participation in advanced liberal democracies ... Hay's book is not only well written and well balanced; it asks all of the right questions." Australian Journal of Political Science "A well written and thoughtful contribution to the debate on declining levels of interest in conventional politics."Sociology "Hay's argument is both intriguing and cogent. [A] highly valuable and innovative account." Political Studies Review "All reflective public managers should contend with Colin Hay's arguments." Public "Hay's book sharply identifies the corrosive consequences of government attempts to evade the problem of public political engagement. It therefore provides a good way into understanding the complex relationships between the ideas and assumptions we project on to politics and the resulting practices and processes." Spiked "This is a superb, high-quality piece of academic research. There is real intelligence at work, being applied to big important problems. Colin Hay makes his arguments cleanly, without making unnecessarily heavy weather of them. He is judicious in his use of evidence, with his tables invariably making telling points. His 'summary lists' capture the structures of the arguments elegantly and accurately. Intellectually, it's a wonderful book." Robert E. Goodin, Australian National University "Although written in a different era, and in a different disciplinary climate, the obvious comparison is with Crick's In Defence of Politics. Like that book, it is guided by a real moral vision that uplifts the practice of politics. Technically it also resembles Crick in simultaneously addressing the beginning reader and the case hardened teacher and practitioner. It is wonderfully clear and direct throughout, but never shirks the analysis of complex data." Michael Moran, University of Manchester "In this challenging, original and wide-ranging study Colin Hay provides a searching examination of the reasons for political disaffection and disengagement, arguing that we should resist the trend to take the politics out of politics. By depoliticizing the ways in which we govern our societies, we lose the capacity to change them. This book should be read by everyone concerned with how to renew our politics and re-engage our citizens." Andrew Gamble, University of Sheffield

Book Description

Politics was once a term with an array of broadly positive connotations, associated with public scrutiny, deliberation and accountability. Yet today it is an increasingly dirty word, typically synonymous with duplicity, corruption, inefficiency and undue interference in matters both public and private. How has this come to pass? Why do we hate politics and politicians so much? How pervasive is the contemporary condition of political disaffection? And what is politics anyway? In this lively and original work, Colin Hay provides a series of innovative and provocative answers to these questions. He begins by tracing the origins and development of the current climate of political disenchantment across a broad range of established democracies. Far from revealing a rising tide of apathy, however, he shows that a significant proportion of those who have withdrawn from formal politics are engaged in other modes of political activity. He goes on to develop and defend a broad and inclusive conception of politics and the political that is far less formal, less state-centric and less narrowly governmental than in most conventional accounts. By demonstrating how our expectations of politics and the political realities we witness are shaped decisively by the assumptions about human nature that we project onto political actors, Hay provides a powerful and highly distinctive account of contemporary political disenchantment. lsquo; Why We Hate Politicsrsquo; will be essential reading for all those troubled by the contemporary political condition of the established democracies.

The book start to set a scientific platform, before the author addressed the question "why we hate politics". This approach has enlightened and prepared me to inform and raise the polical consciounsness of my radio listeners better and with authority about the bahavior of our politicians on our island, in my Radio Program: "Options & Solutions".

Collin Hay, a British academic (University lecturer) in his book entitled: Why we hate Politics, published in 2007. He makes a detailed study of political disaffection and disengagement in western democracies. The study is based mainly in the decline of voter’s participation in formal political activities in the USA and in Europe.Documented with graphs and tables, as well as empirical evidence observed from decades of data collated, plus the work of other political scientists and commentators. The book reveals that political disaffection and disengagement is a complex issue but can be explained in what the author calls or classifies as follows:- The supply side (Politicians and public authorities): Incapacity to respond to people aspirations- The demand side (Voters and general public): Savvier- The role of political Commentators and scientists).- The de-politicisation of politics: prominence of civil society and independent agencies, globalisation. Collin Hay contends that these are contributing factors. The lack of participation is not solely due to the voters but also to the purveyors of political goods. He cites the diminishing sense of public and civic duty as well as apathy from the voters. Moreover, In this category the author argues that one of the raisons for the disaffection could be due to a more educated, better informed, less deferential, more realistic and therefore, savvy electorate passing on appropriate and critical judgement on institutions of representatives government which are obsolete and need to be reformed. On the supply side he argues that the competition between political parties which he characterises as Marketization of electoral competition in advanced liberal democracies. Consequently, this has resulted in politicians and political parties presenting themselves to voters in terms of personality or image rather than policy. Finally the author attributes the lack of participation to de-politicisation and globalisation; whereby government institutions are turned into independent agencies (quangos in England) as well as the effect of globalisation which takes away the power of a single state and put it in the jurisdiction of an international organisation. The book clearly demonstrates the decline of formal political participation over several decades in liberals western democracies until 2007 however, with the emergence of popular political parties in countries such as Greece with Syriza, Podemos in Spain due to the financial crisis of 2007, the resurgence of the Labour party in the United Kingdom due to its new Leader Jeremy Corbyn aversion for the politics of austerity advocated and adopted by the main liberal countries in the western world; in addition to the USA with the candidacies (2016 Presidential election) of Donald Trump and Bernard Sanders, have showed that people want to participate. What has happened since the publication of the book is that a new political landscape is developing. New political movements are emerging under our eyes they are extremely popular and led by charismatics leaders capable of galvanizing the voters and creating a new dynamic that energises the young’s as well as the elders by dragging them out of their political apathy. The increasing hostility towards the financial oligarchy, the political elites and the corporate media as well as the complete inability of elected politicians to address the concerns of the many has finally created a new breed of citizens who want to take part in political activities but are just waiting for a leader that can articulate their needs and wants and brings changes that they can believe in.

"Holy baloney, Batman! The Joker is Loose!" I don't know about the Joker, but all the Zombies are loose in this all-comprehensive memorial to 1932's cult classic "White Zombie". Everything you wanted to know(and a 120 things you could pass on..) about this minor gem are wrapped up in "White Zombie", written by Gary Don Rhodes. I found many an interesting passage, some remarkable photographs, and several pages that improved my sleeping problems in this weighty tome. All-in-all a must-have for the Bela Lugosi fan.

In the cinephile's ideal world, every film would get the deluxe treatment McFarland has given to White Zombie in Gary Rhodes' book. It's hard to imagine why this 1932 horror film, a primitive but atmospheric Gothic directed by Victor Halperin, was chosen, but we're not complaining. Rhodes is aware of the film's dubious rep ("Many lovers of classic movies agree with what many critics said in the beginning, that this is a silly, badly played example of penny-dreadful filmmaking"), but is determined to rehabilitate it by examining it from every possible angle from the historical to the sociological to the analytical. Rhodes is persuasive in outlining the film's attractions. There's the contribution of the inestimable Bela Lugosi ("leaner and more wolfish than in any of his other pictures"); the fantastic mishmash of sets (from The Cat and the Canary, Dracula, Frankenstein, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and others) that together make for a compelling otherworldly atmosphere; the chiaroscuro cinematography; the film's foreshadowing of the mood-drenched Val Lewton B films ten years later; and the film's standing, in the author's words, as "an important work of 1930s cinema, of independent filmmaking, and of the horror film genre."Rhodes thoroughly investigates the evolution of White Zombie from a myrid of sources classical (Faust), popular (Trilby), and exploitative (the 1929 nonfiction voodoo book The Magic Island), through preproduction, postproduction, and finished film to its purportedly wide influence on "subsequent voodoo and zombie related books, articles, films, and plays." Rhodes deserves kudos for seeking out a wide range of original sources, including the director's widow who supplied him with biographical information on Halperin missing from all other accounts. A series of detailed appendices cover everything from reviews of the film to box-office grosses to pressbook reproductions. If the author's (freely admitted) obsession with White Zombie sometimes carries him over the edge -- the "Victor Halperin Family Scrapbook Photographs" is nice but is it necessary? -- it's easy to forgive him considering the breadth and depth of this obvious labor of love. Included in the feast are 244 images and photographs.

Gary Don Rhodes' take on "White Zombie" is keenly akin to those of Pauline Kael on "Citizen Kane" or George E. Turner on "King Kong": Each author's fascination with a focused topic yields a book of intense purpose and value beyond mere interest in one particular motion picture. Each of us has such a film in our picture-going experience, one overriding favorite that informs the way we regard all other movies, and such authors as Kael, Turner and Rhodes show us how a deeper understanding of that one film can enrich the viewing experience across-the-board.Rhodes' scholarship (on practically any topic) is meticulous to the point of obsession. In "W.Z.: Anatomy of a Horror Film" he puts this fact-finding mania to compelling use, not only sharing the raw materials he has unearthed but also interpreting them to demonstrate how and why "White Zombie" -- an "unlikely classic," as George Turner and I once termed the film in an article for "American Cinematographer" -- has remained relevant over the long stretch.Painstakingly researched and assembled, Rhodes' book was in preparation all during and beyond the mid-1990s period when George Turner (since deceased) and I were assembling our 20th anniversary edition of the more generalized book "Forgotten Horrors," on whose research Rhodes helped out considerably. George and I beefed up considerably our own book's chapter on "White Zombie," but we also left it to Gary Don Rhodes to get in the final say on that film's significance. Our trust has proved well placed, and the resulting volume is a fusion of style and substance worth cherishing.

Wow! All I can say is how much I really enjoy this book! This book by Mr. Rhodes gives such insight into the making of White Zombie that it is hard to believe so much can be found about one movie. Especially a movie such as White Zombie with its awesome press kit pictures and other amazing stills. I thought his first book on Lugosi was thoroughly researched...this one is just as good! Superbly done. Again and again Rhodes does not disappoint and should be a necessary book in anyone's book collection or any Lugosi completist's library.
