I went into Kathryn Atwood’s Women Heroes of World War II hoping the experience would leave me with the same fascination I experienced after watching HBO’s excellent series Band of Brothers. While the book does deliver in that regard, in some ways I feel like I got so much more.Atwood paints vivid stills of her twenty-six heroines, offering up generally their most significant wartime contributions as well as fascinating peeks into each woman’s personality. Perhaps my favorite profile is that of Nora Inayat Khan, a petite and quite shy British resistance worker who failed miserably early on but came back to become one of the most fierce and determined women in the book. At one time, the once gentle girl fought violently with the unfortunate Nazi sympathizer sent to arrest her, clawing and scratching him so badly that he could only restrain her by putting a gun to her head.Atwood’s writing is straightforward and suitable for all ages, although it’s clear that the adventure-style telling of most stories is designed for younger audiences. Some profiles wrap rather quickly, but this seems to be a byproduct of Atwood’s desire to keep the book compact more than anything else. Each story could be (and often has been) expanded upon to form entire books of their own. With that in mind, Women Heroes of World War II serves as the perfect primer for those seeking a great introduction to women’s contributions in WWII.Thankfully, Atwood treats some of the more disturbing outcomes of her heroines with a grace that will allow even more sensitive readers such as myself to continue. Still, some of the stories were so moving or unfortunate that they brought a tear to my eye. It is always difficult to read of broken families, tortures, murders and the like, no matter how gentle the treatment. But Atwood is brilliant in showing that despite the overwhelmingly dark situations these women found themselves in, their character, moral fortitude, and faith made their lives shine so brightly that we can still feel their warmth to this day. Most outcomes are good, however. Each profile brings something new, unexpected, or even near miraculous. I found myself gut-wrenched at times, cheering at others, and sometimes just generally amazed. Atwood has taken my perception of women and their war time contributions from a merely national one to an international one. She skillfully illustrates that women abroad often fought two wars: one against the ruthless Germans, and the other against the sexism so deeply rooted in the culture of that day. Thankfully these wonderful women helped win both wars.In Women Heroes of World War II, I feel like I got what could be called a “Band of Sisters”. It’s about a group of women not bound by a military brigade or battalion, but by the greater bond of a common moral code, one that impelled them to help those less fortunate than themselves and to sacrifice everything, even up to their very lives, for the sake of freedom. It is an excellent read.

There are not enough true stories written about women who overcame great odds to do what they knew their conscience and morality was telling them to do. I am over half way through reading this compact book on numerous heroic women of WWII. This book was intended for young women and although I am not a young woman, I still am enjoying reading about these courageous women. My congratulations to Ms. Atwood on researching and finding all these women of which only a few I had heard of.

As a World War II history buff, I was intrigued to find a book that centers on the role of women. These "26 Stories of espionage, Sabotage, Resistance, and Rescue" do not disappoint. Atwood details the heroic exploits of women from all over Europe: Germany, Poland, France, Holland, Belgium, Denmark, and Great Britain, as well as the United States. Whether famous entertainers like Josephine Baker and Marlene Dietrich or simply ordinary wives, students, teachers, these women step up to take their place in history.Atwood briefly lays out the background history of the war and each country's particular role before delving into the actual accounts of the women, which is helpful. The photographs and additional information such as speeches also adds a haunting immediacy to the already stirring text. Included are very helpful "Learn More" text boxes which provide the reader with important follow-up information. Also included are a glossary and notes. This is a highly readable and engaging addition to the body of literature for grades 5-12 on this subject. Each account would easily work also as a short read aloud to inspire learning on this important topic. As a school librarian, I am looking forward to using this when my students study the second World War.

World War II was a horrific event in human history filled with barbarians who murdered, maimed, and raped millions of innocent people and destroyed countries and cultures. But it is also filled with heroes and heroines who did not surrender to fear or inertia or capitulation. These men and women fought against the evil no matter what it took. The non-fiction book by Kathryn J. Atwood entitled Women Heroes of World War II recounts the awe-inspiring stories of women who would not be enslaved and who fought the Nazis with their entire bodies and souls during that war. For all of them, it was not just a duty but a moral imperative.Women Heroes of World War II gives descriptions of the actions that these women took at great risk to save thousands of Jews from extermination, conduct espionage missions against the Nazi occupying forces, communicate vital information within their countries' resistance forces, and kill the Nazi oppressors as well as sabotaging their infrastructure. There are 26 valiant women from eight countries whose daring exploits are profiled. The book is short (266 pages) as to length but long regarding significance. Every page is used to astutely convey what these women accomplished, and those accomplishments are spellbinding. Atwood also gives references to books, articles, and videos about each subject within the text for further research, and she provides definitions of some terms used along the way. She has a smooth writing style that's easy on the mind's comprehension synapses. After reading this inspirational book, I think you will agree that these women's devotion to and fight for freedom and their courageous deeds to defeat the tyrants determined to take that freedom away are values and actions that we need to continue and that were on display over 70 years ago by heroines we need to always honor. Women Heroes of World War II is highly recommended.

About the Author

Eugene O'Neill (1888-1953) is one of the most significant forces in the history of American theater. With no uniquely American tradition to guide him, O'Neill introduced various dramatic techniques, which subsequently became staples of the U.S. theater. By 1914 he had written twelve one-act and two long plays. Of this early work, only Thirst and Other One-act plays (1914) was originally published. From this point on, O'Neill's work falls roughly into three phases: the early plays, written from 1914 to 1921 (The Long Voyage Home, The Moon of the Caribbees, Beyond the Horizon, Anna Christie); a variety of full-length plays for Broadway (Desire Under the Elms; Great God Brown; Ah, Wilderness!); and the last, great plays, written between 1938 and his death (The Iceman Cometh, Long Day's Journey Into Night, A Moon for the Misbegotten). Eugene O'Neill is a four-time Pulitzer Prize winner, and he was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature in 1936.

As an aspiring playwright, it's helpful to read the early works of great dramatists. To simply read "Long Day's Journey Into Night" or "A Touch of the Poet," while examples of great writing, can be overwhelming. I'll never write like that. But to read O'Neill's earlier stuff... it seems more possible. This is not to say I'm the next O'Neill, obviously: it's an encouragement to others like me who are writing their first plays. Reading only plays like Hamlet or Oedipus Rex can be paralyzing in their greatness. This collection is perfect to see how one of the best started out. As for the book itself, as with other LOA books, the quality is top notch. It's a lifetime investment.

LETS PLAY IT AGAIN.

Volume 1 of Library of America's edition of Eugene O'Neill's plays covers his early years until 1920. Some of the 29 plays included here are not really worth preserving. Many are clearly apprentice work, but none of them is boring or uninteresting. Many are just unimportant and forgettable. Many contain the nucleus of something larger, but remain immature.O'Neill was a white spot on my personal literary map. I don't think I ever watched any of his plays. I knew that he had a Nobel Prize in 1936, but that had not motivated me yet to find out more about him. Now I am happy that I let the Ace talk me into giving O'Neill a try.O'Neill's first book was a collection of 5 plays published by his father under the name `Thirst' in 1916. Some of them were staged, mostly in Provincetown. They are apprentice work and deal with O'Neill's personal agenda: drinking, tuberculosis, suicide, the sea, unstable relations, father and son conflicts. In 1950, a publisher assembled the 5 plays of `Thirst' plus 5 others written in the 1910s under the title "Ten `Lost' Plays by Eugene O'Neill". Two of the plays were quite promising (`The Movie Man' has a Hollywood firm pay for exclusive rights to battles and executions in a Mexican uprising; `Servitude' has a woman believing naively that her favorite writer means and lives what he writes).O'Neill became more substantial with `The Personal Equation': a four act play about a group of radicals in the time before WW1. They want to stir up the proletariat to stand together for international solidarity. (That was not to happen, as we know. Instead, when the war began, the proletarians of all nations all flogged to their respective flags.)The radical group plans an act of sabotage against a shipping line, which is supposed to be followed by a general strike. The idea fails, as personal relations and entanglements of the designated saboteur intervene, such as a love affair and a father in the opposite camp. The play was first produced in New York in 2000.I would have expected that stuff like this could have caused trouble with Joe McCarthy. I don't know enough about O'Neill to know if he did have such trouble.Another collection of early plays was `The Moon of the Caribbees', which united 7 plays in a book, mainly sea stories. These were all produced either in Provincetown or in New York. They are short stories adjusted to the stage. They might have been better as short stories, but they are not uninteresting.`Before Breakfast': an eminently playable short piece about a drinking woman, a one-person play insofar as the husband is only `talked' to or nagged at.`Now I ask you': a comedy that seems to start with a suicide, about a confused young upper class woman who believes that she believes in free love. Rather silly and not worth reviving.`Beyond the Horizon' was his breakthrough to Broadway and Pulitzer, in 1920. It is a depressed story of bad choices, irreparable consequences, and endless regrets.`Shell Shock' is a strong one-act play about WW1 soldiers; it suffers from an all too miraculous healing of the title problem.`The Dreamy Kid' is a short play with an all-black cast. The title hero is a young gangster who should run from the police, but can't, as he must stay with his dying grandmother, who put a curse on him in case he leaves her alone. This was used as libretto for a (jazz?-) opera by J.P. Johnson, which might be more interesting than the play itself.`The Straw' is a strong play about 2 young people who meet in a lung sanatorium. It has autobiographical elements and can be seen as an attempt at atoning for past misdeeds.`Chris Christophersen' has a Swedish sailor working as a coal barge skipper along the US east coast; he meets his neglected daughter after years. A bit lame.`Gold' is a stretch version of `Where the Cross is Made', which was included in the `Moon of the Caribbees' collection. A retired sailor has infected his son with the same obsession that clouds his own mind.`Anna Christie' won O'Neill his second drama Pulitzer in 1922. It is a reworking of the earlier `Chris Christophersen'. The Swede's story is turned towards the daughter's perspective. She meets her father after so many years and hides her life in prostitution from him and her new suitor. The volume closes with tom-toms and the majestic play `The Emperor Jones'. O'Neill left his accustomed realm of realism and went for the heart of darkness.

Not all of O'Neill's plays were successful. However, it was fascinating to see him grow as a playwrite and tackle issues that one would not think of being tackled in the early 1900's. O'Neill's plays truly speak to you, to everyone, and get at the heart of many social problems. While not everything he tried to do was perfectly executed, O'Neill did push the boundaries of what was acceptable in plays, both simply written and actually for the stage. An entire class is taught on O'Neill's plays. This edition of his complete works is amazing and gives the reader some other versions of plays that were not actually staged because of the difficulties in staging them and/or the public disapproval of the material/length of the plays.

It isn't clear who would be apt to read this volume of early plays by O'Neill. These days, drama departments seem to assign new plays by unknown playwrights, as though the professors were in the pay of the publishers. Why order books by dead writers? These plays, however, are much more useful, I should think, for the aspiring playwright because they are exercises of a young dramatic master in his early stage of apprenticeship. He is learning his craft and writing his way to mastery. They are marvelous models of an immature writer. They are not perfect specimens, not intimidating masterworks, but slight, flawed works that any playwright might feel inspired by. They are awkward, rough, even stale, but each seeks to perform a dramatic task. O'Neill was very conscious of what he sought to do. These are not entertainments. Read them, learn from them, learn not to write this badly, and you'll be on your way.

This is a tremendous source work, providing a sequential study of O'Neill's development as a dramatist. While not all of the plays are particularly successful, they reveal themes and settings that would provide the foundation for the later O'Neill masterworks. And there are many wonderful early dramas, such as the four S.S. Glencairn plays, his first broadway success "Beyond the Horizon," and the daring "Anna Christie," all of which tested and expanded the dramatic form in America. A wonderful collection!

Nice summary of GI values that are scientifically tested. However, many products listed are not available at my local grocery store. I think this has many products sold in Australia since the testing is done in there. For staples and many international products this has information I need to keep my blood sugar on an even keel. I have found this book to be absolutely essential. Eating only slow and medium-fast absorbed carbs has made me feel better and kept my blood sugar at reasonable amounts. In spite of being diagnosed with prediabetes (or metabolic syndrome) many years ago, paying attention to the GI of foods has kept me from going into diabetes like my father and younger brother. I also don't get the low blood sugar that makes me irritable and tired like I used to because I know what to eat to keep my blood sugar at a low but steady rate. Vitally important information!

BOUGHT THIS ON KINDAL SPECIFICALLY FOR THE GI LIST. THIS LIST WAS TOO SMALL TO BE READ ON COMPUTER.NORMALLY I LOVE AMAZON. BUT I LOST $6 ON THIS ORDER

I don't understand how this book is legit. It seems to be full of misinformation, declaring things like frosted flakes and converted rice to be low GI (checked with my endocrinologist, they are wrong). Made for the Canadian market, dated info, many brands are irrelevant.

I never write reviews but had to for this product. Dr demanded that hubby eat low carb AND low glycemic index. All of this, at once, was hard to understand. Needed one guide that contained all necessary info and could be carried in my purse. This is perfect. In a very easy format it gives GI: whether it’s low, med, or high: Carbs: and Fiber. Some others have given it a low rating for not containing more brand-name weight-management products. That doesn’t bother me a bit since we’re supposed to concentrate on unprocessed healthier foods.

The only thing I would change about this book is for them to have an index of foods at the back so you can know where to find them. Sometimes I don't know exactly which category a certain food is found in. And so I have to search for it. Like tofu, for instance. Never did find it. Haha. But the book is fantastic to take with you to the grocery store. So many items, with specific brand names. And lists of "good" foods and foods to avoid. I haven't had a chance to read it entirely yet, but it is quite helpful in meal planning and grocery shopping.

I read the first review on here about not being able to read the print but thought I would take my chances. Luckily Amazon refunded my credit card. Next time I will pay closer attention. The previous review is correct you can enlarge the print but it is a complete blur. I have ordered the paperback instead

Although this book was marketed in the US and Canada, it was written in and features brand name foods found in Australia and New Zealand. Apples, potatoes and zucchini have the same GI's in any country but I wanted to know about packaged foods. The brand-name foods listed in this book are not found in the US and therefore the book wasn't useful for me.

I got this specifically for my Kindle and while the general text is fine and my problem is that the charts listing the glycemic load are way too small to read on a Kindle. I tried enlarging the type, changing margins, etc. The regular type changed but nothing in the charts changed size. I would need a magnifying glass to read the charts on my Kindle and that's just unrealistic.

Those oblivious, the-world-revolves-around-me types who leave their grocery carts in the middle of the aisle, chain mail forwarders, spammers and telemarketers and express line abusers--they're not criminals, exactly, so you can't lock them away or kill them. Still, in their small abuses they detract significantly from the quality of our lives day to day, and for that they merit some kind of punishment. But how precisely to go about it? New York Times reporter Ian Urbina may have some ideas for you in his book Life's Little Annoyances: True Tales of People who Just Can't Take it Anymore.Starting with his own experiences exacting revenge from a roommate who was routinely pilfering his cookie dough ice cream, Urbina includes some 70 stories about people fighting back against the rude and unthinking among us. His short tales of righteous revenge--the ideas [...] were collected from the fed-up people described by his subtitle--are divided among nine chapters by genre of annoyance: from mail-related (junk mail, the profusion of AOL disks one receives), to service-related (overly zealous store employees), to the vehicular (tailgaters, proselytizing bumper stickers). The most even-tempered of readers may choose to turn the other cheek when irritated by life's smaller annoyances. The rest of us will probably come across a few ideas in Urbina's book that we'd like to try out ourselves. I can see myself, for example, putting telemarketers on "hold"--that is, on speakerphone, so they can listen while I finish dinner, change a diaper, watch TV, etc. And I am intrigued by the idea of mailing off blank "blow-in" cards, those subscription cards that fall out of magazines all the time, so that the company responsible for them will have to pay postage. But while I admire him for it, I would not have the gall myself to imitate one man's sweetly cruel response to pushy sales clerks who can't take "I'm just browsing" for an answer....Ian Urbina's Life Little Annoyances is a quick, titillating little read. Have fun with it.Reviewed by Debra Hamel, author of Trying Neaira: The True Story of a Courtesan's Scandalous Life in Ancient Greece

Clever little book that captures many of life's irritations and peeves. The book offers some creative solutions for dealing with offenders, though it stops short of endorsing that you use them. A humorous read filled with laughs. It makes a great gift.

This is a good book to pick up when you have short periods of time to read. It was recommended and discussed on a local radio talk show

An absolute hoot! I found this book at Borders and was laughing out loud in the aisle! Bought several copies from Amazon and have and will give them out to friends and family when appropriate. I will pass on my copy as well, as it is just too good not to share! PS, my personal favorite is the rejection "rejection" letter!

I saw a review of the book on the news one night and I knew I had to get it. It was very comforting to know that there are many people out there giving it back to the MAN who tries to keep us down. It also encourages me to be more creative when it comes to being passive aggressive. I recommend this book to everyone.

I didn't read the entire book, cover to cover....YET. What I did read was very enjoyable,a bit surprising re the actions of the affected and usually quite humorous.

This is the book you take with you to kill time in waiting rooms. Or keep in the bathroom. Nothing important, but fun to read. Almost everyone will be inspired to use one or more of these devilish methods of fighting back at life's little annoyances.

I ordered Life's Little Annoyances: True Tales of People Who Just Can't Take it Anymore by Ian Urbina expecting to find some light humor along the lines of Cool Dead People by Jane O'Boyle. Quick, silly reading to pass the time. Instead the book felt to me like it lived just a bit much up to its title. The book showcases who decided to strike back at some of the annoying things that happen everyday: junk mail, grocery store discount clubs, cellphone overcharges. A couple of the stories are clever, like the man who invented the TVBGone, a device that turns off TVs in places like restaurants and bars. But for the most part, the book simply showed how petty we can be as people. We get angry over the smallest slight and then try to hurt or disrespect the person we perceived as the source of our injury. The problem with playing that game is that the person who caused the injury can reply just as easily. Most of these are not tales of revenge, they are sad stories of people wasting time trying to get respect from other people who just don't care. With all of the wonderful books sitting on editors' desks, I just don't understand how a trifle like this got published. It's not clever, it's just a sad indictment of how far our values has slipped.
