My new favorite Fall book!!! I teach preschool and I just adored this book!! I love the flow of words and the rhythm of the book. It was adorable. The toe wigglin' out of his sock. Added fun for anyone who knows anything about square dancing too. But even without that knowledge, the illustrations and musical words will take you into the barn for the dance. Loved it!!

One of my all time favorite Fall children's books. I purchased for my granddaughter. The words of this beautiful book just dance off my tongue as I read it aloud. Although the pictures are a bit dark, the words lift off the page in magical fashion.

Read this book to my girls when they were little...so much so that the book fell apart from use! So I bought this new copy to read to my 6 grandsons. Love the way the author uses midwest vernacular to tell the story and also the way the moonlight is so believably illustrated. Enchanting! Has been our long-time farm family favorite!!!

I've been teaching preschool for over 35 years and this is one of my "all time favorites" book. Rich text and delightful, magical illustrations.

"Barn Dance" is a read-aloud book, made for uniting reader and listener. When we first discovered it in out family, I was reading it to my two oldest grandsons--then three and six. Their mother, an elementary school teacher, began to share it with them in my absence; but they shouted, "No! Mumby reads that to us." They are now twenty-two and twenty-five; but we are still bonded, thanks to this wonderful book. (And, yes, they are still both Skinny Kids)

Thank you! Love this book!

Rhyme and rhythm.......Bill Martin is A+ writer of children's books. Always used in my Kindergarten classroom over the years.

Unfortunately I will never be able to read this book to my child because all the pages fell out when I opened it. Maybe I will try to glue the pages l back in because it's a cute story, but I won't buy from this seller again.

I'm a rather obsessive history buff. While many periods are of interest to me, probably most interesting is the Roman Empire and WWI era. For some interested in both, this is quite possibly the best book ever written. Many other famous warriors are also referenced in this classic, which touches on a variety of historical periods. Nonetheless, Scipio Africanus is the focus, and he is thoroughly covered. You have to walk away agreeing with Hart that he quite probably is the greatest "captain" ever. Hart wrote a true masterpiece here. I thoroughly enjoyed his writing style. I've already picked up another one of his books and will surely read others. I give this one my highest recommendation!

The author gives a compelling argument that Scipio Africanus is the greatest general of all time. First, he defeated Hannibal, widely recognized as one of the greatest. No other general defeated an opponent with Hannibals abilities. Scipios tactics, and strategy, under extremely difficult circumstances, and with minimal help from Rome, probably were unsurpassed. He had a new trick for every circumstance. He left Rome unchallenged in the Mediterranean world. This book is a good read, adding insights into the strengths and weaknesses of most of the great generals of all time. His arguments are at times over the top, and refutable, but over all he's probably correct. A more in depth comparison with Subatai would be a worthwhile study, at least as far as tactical skill is concerned. However, for the benefit of his country and the conquered, Scipio can't be beat.

I really wanted to write a wholly positive review of this work. It is very readable and written for general audiences; you do not need more than a cursory understanding of Roman history to appreciate this book. Written originally in the the wake of World War I, the author's efforts to draw parallels with the Great War provide fascinating insights not only into Scipio but into the mind of a world between two cataclysms. The authors late British Imperial background also provides some fascinating (if tone deaf) insights into the mindset of colonialism. However, the black mark against this book is the author's total inability to appreciate the flaws of his subject. Clearly, there are limited primary and even secondary sources from which to draw. As the author notes early, we tend to focus more on ultimately unsuccessful generals like Napoleon or Lee than on those who vanquished them. The problem is that the author turns to hagiography - even in the limited instances where there is enough data to work from so that there can be two sides to an argument, the author invariably is the apologist for Scipio's side. He simply does not view his subject dispassionately. This is a shame. I read biographies of Scipio and Caesar back-to-back, and the author appears right that Scipio lacked Caesar's tendancy to fall into his enemies' traps. But it is hard to tell if this is indeed the result of Scipio's genius or if the author is neglecting or underplaying mistakes that Scipio made.In any event, I recommend this book for both people with a good grasp of Roman history and for those, like my wife, who think that Skippy O'Africanus was Ireland's greatest champion.

What a wonderful light 'biography' of Scipio Africanus! As the author points out, historians throughout antiquity have, for some reason, put heavy emphasis on the generals who lost ie. Hannibal & Napoleon. Publius Cornelius Scipio is a rare figure in history. A conquering general who defeated the dreaded Hannibal along with all the major Carthaginian generals of the age, without the direct help of the Senate, but who upon returning did not desire praise or position, or even revenge. A truly amazing figure to be studied, I highly recommend this book.

I don't want to spoil it but, yeah, Scipio may well have been greater than Napoleon. An eminently readable history, and Sir Basil has a unique narrative style. This is one of his earlier works, so it is maybe not as fluid as his later histories. The best parts were where Liddell Hart was engrossed in narrative about maneuvers, or battles, or political infighting. The parts where he assesses and evaluates Scipio against more recent figures are somewhat underwhelming.

Liddell Hart is a military analyst and as such the book focuses on strategy and tactics, not just of battles but includes theater strategies before and after conflict. The same sort of tactics continued up to WWII - only the weapons changed. Scipio was very innovative and fought with limited support from Rome. He used coordinated naval and land operations. His ability to change formations in the heat of battle are amazing. How this was accomplished is not explained as communications were bound to be early developmental. His communications must have been amazing and probably lost for centuries. He was also able to separate his cavalry from his troops and then bring them back at a critical stage (remember Gettysburg?) I concur that he was the greatest general, more so than even Alexander, as Scipio fought seasoned the troops of Carthage in Spain and Africa.

I rarely give reviews and this one will be short and to the point. Well written and researched with obvious respect for Scipio Africanus but not in any way does Mr. Hart edge toward gushing in his praise. Logical and thorough with engaging commentary. Well done biography with a concise and even timeline done to inform and entertain. Thanks to the author, well done sir.
