Amazon.com Review

This book is an overview of the career of the FBI man who nearly single-handedly created the system for personality profiling of violent offenders. If there's a big-time multiple murderer from about 1950 until now who hasn't been interviewed by Robert Ressler, he probably refused the honor. Indispensable reading for serial killer mavens, and better written than John Douglas and Mark Olshaker's Mindhunter, this book is packed with fascinating details from dozens of cases: The killer John Joubert, for example, started his life of cruelty as a kid one day when he was riding his bike with a sharpened pencil in his hand. He rode up next to a little girl who was walking, and stabbed her in the back with the pencil. Ouch!

"Whoever Fights Monsters" by Robert Ressler can be summed up with a quote from page 125."Every ounce of information we can extract from a killer about his mind and methods gives us more ammunition to track the next one."Mr. Ressler chronicles his career with the military and eventually the FBI.He is credited with coining the term "serial killer" and he gives the meaning and origin of the term.In the book the author documents the start of profiling and his unsanctioned venture into prison interviews with violent criminals. It was risky, but over time has paid off with some candid interviews and useful information for future investigations. Some of the interview highlights that Mr. Ressler shares in the book come from Edmund Kemper, Charles Manson, Tex Watson, Ted Bundy, David Berkowitz, and Richard Speck. He also gives examples of agent-interviewers who got too close emotionally to their subject. He wrote about the compulsive confessor Henry Lee Lucas who never saw a murder that he wouldn't claim as his work much to the embarrassment of law enforcement agencies throughout the country.Mr. Ressler's personal view of "Silence of the Lambs" and "Red Dragon" from his experience in the field was educational.I was impressed with this author's writing style. Profilers have a reputation for being arrogant (whether that's just an impression or valid I wouldn't know) but Mr. Ressler humbly explains mistakes he has made over his career. He is efficient at detailing the psychology of the different types of violent criminals. A good book about criminal profiling!

Excellent. Very well written, compelling, essentially so well done that it becomes a textbook but is still riveting, disturbing,--and heartbreaking--to read. It is very detailed, clear, and professional. Of course, I came to this book due to the series Mindhunter, which is a brilliant series and hopefully will be renewed for years to come with the same cast. As a mental health practitioner I found this an important and very helpful text to be familiar with. Should be read by all in criminal justice/law enforcement and mental health. As an aside, this is not material for persons under 16 y/o. Finally, i don't get the snarky remarks regarding the author, Ressler. I think his 'ego' is quite well managed and never intrudes. His skill, experience, hard earned knowledge and insight, collegiality, and mission--and through that devoted mission giving a gift of himself and his skill to numerous families, communities, colleagues does. If you watch his video interviews on youtube he is very straightforward, genuine, and humble. In concert with reading this book, I am watching docs on the cases he reviews on fbi files, forensic files, etc as well as doing research, internet research, and watching docs by professionals, including Ressler, as well as interviews with the convicted. This is a major work and I thank this man (he has passed away) for his dedication and work on behalf of the nation. I'll be moving on to Douglas and Hazelwood next.

Did you just finish Mindhunter? This is the next book to read. It not only gives information about the psychology of serial murderers, but also the inner workings of the FBI. This book was first p published in 1992 so I was a bit worried it would be dated; however, I found this not to be an issue at all. If you like Mindhunter, My Favorite Murder, etc., this is an amazing book for you!

In college I had the privilege of attending a seminar by John Douglas. I was in a criminal psychology class in 1997. Before and after I have fascinated by profiling. After watching Mindhunter on Netflix I decided to read this book. I read Mindhunter by Douglas years ago and find Ressler's book more pathologic and emotionally engaging. I work in healthcare and am in awe of the details that I can apply to the victims I work with who have been sexually assaulted. This is, in short, an amazing book.

I'm enjoying the book but it's obvious that he author has more experience in the FBI than as an author. There's a lot of unneccessary explanation about how great the author is and all of the great things he's done, people he's met, influence of his work. The writing is unrefined. Wording and phrasing is a bit repetitive. You're not going to get drawn in and lost in the writing. All that said, it is a first-hand account spanning a wide range of experiences in true-crime. I don't regret buying it and will finish it. True-crime enthusiasts will find it full of interesting details.

This was an interesting book and gave me better insight into those that committed these types of crimes, and those that track them. The main reason I gave it 3 stars is because of Ressler's grandiose opinion of himself. I would have given it 3.5 if possible, but no more.Ressler seems extremely arrogant, and makes it seem like he was the only one in the FBI working on things like this. In addition, he rarely gave thanks or praise to the many people who helped him get to where he was. Anytime something positive arose it seemed like it was all due to him and his efforts, which I find hard to believe.

This is a fascinating book. Mr Ressler is a brilliant man outstanding in his field. Much like a farmer I suppose. I would have to agree with other reviews about the author tooting his own horn but when you've attained the level of expertise and been involved in the type of ground breaking work that Mr Ressler has then it's legit. Whether anyone wants to hear it or not. This is a must read book by one of if not the leading authority on this subject matter.

I don’t usually take the time to write reviews but I’d like to take the time on this one. I have two teenagers and I’m a single Mom. Quite frankly, I’m overwhelmed! I saw an advertisement for this book on Facebook and it actually had me LAUGHING! ME! Laughing about having teenagers! I decided that if an advertisement could do that, I would try the book. The book came today and can hardly put it down. But I have to because I’m a Mom. But, thank you! Truly...thank you for what I’m learning. I feel so empowered. I know it can only get better from here. And thanks for the laughs...it’s been a while.

I was an extremely well-read mom on the in’s and out’s of parenting kids, but then my kids hit puberty and I basically felt like I was in a free-fall. And then I heard about this book. I cannot say enough good things about it! It feels like there are MANY parenting books out there regarding young children, but very few about teenagers. Even if there were a ton of teenage parenting books, though, this one would stand out. Josh is relatable, entertaining, and helps take the fear out of parenting teenagers and supporting them on their journey. Whether you have an “easy” teenager or one who is going through the worst challenges, this book helps you see how to parent with love, set boundaries, and let your child know you care. The sample contracts (with access to downloadable/editable versions) are gold. The conversation prompts are awesome. Probably my favorite part, though, is the hope that Josh has woven throughout. I don’t feel afraid anymore (most days—ha!). It’s like I have a mentor sitting beside me, validating my good efforts and helping me to see where I can level it up. Always, always with the reminder that my child is worth every hard thing, and that I am doing life-changing work here.

I had to read this for a graduate course on adolescent development, and I was impressed with the depth of research and consultation that the author completed in producing this funny, completely approachable, and hopeful book. Reading between the lines (and in the reference section), I recognized Eriksonian theory, Attachment theory, and and current research on resilience lending support, when I might have expected this to be an anecdotal parenting guide. Mr. Shipp has an amazing story worth telling, but I'm also impressed with his collaboration to produce something beyond his biography that offers real, practical help for disconnected families. Parents, educators, volunteers, and professionals who work with teens will find it useful. I especially liked the case studies on Hubris and Humility--recognizing myself in common traps that parents fall into while raising teens.

What I thought was really helpful about this book was that it encourages you to reconceptualize your relationship to your teenager more constructively as that of "coach" rather than "boss." It also helps calm one down about the inevitable hassles around being disrespectful, not doing homework, and pushing boundaries in the million and one ways that teens do. Then it offers practical solutions for the more pressing issues. A tool in doing this that I particularly have found useful are behavioral contracts (on Shipp's website) that you can modify as needed. We have put both the general behavioral contract and the cellphone contract in place in our family and it was very helpful to clarify ground rules that were murky. Overall, Shipp's book both removed some responsibilities that I was carrying unnecessarily and implemented some new ones for me, and gave our teens a lot more ownership of their behaviors, which in retrospect they had been sorely lacking. We are only a few weeks into implementation of the contracts so I can't say the method has been life-changing, but it has definitely already led to several positive behavioral changes, which is going in the right direction.

After reading this book, I no longer feel so...lost. I have a plan, and I have learned so much about teenagers and, maybe more importantly, myself.I feel better equipped to deal with life right now, and I know I'll be referring back to this book in the future.P.S. I'm an avid reader. This is not the first parenting book I've read. But it is the best.

I am not a parent, but with my role as a mentor I decided to pick up this book to understand teenagers better. I was AMAZED at all the topics that were discussed in the book from cyber-bullying to building trust. The part that best supported my work and efforts to impact students was Part 2. The author concisely and articulately breaks down the phases of the teenage mind from 11-18. He decodes each age from what motivates them to how they think. It helps you realize that you have to communicate with teenagers differently depending on their age and motives. Through this section the author provides you with a proxy making it easier to support and understand their situation.Lastly, the author is great at telling stories and breaking his ideas down in a simple way so you can take his insight and run with it. I will reread this book several times and use it as a resource.

Absolutely insightful into teenage thinking and motivations. I have learned a lot and it has directly impacted my relationship with my teen in such a positive manner. I was recommended this book and would easily recommend this to parents of a teen or upcoming teen. Easy to read and full of great information you can directly apply. Highly recommended.

Josh's book is written in a style that makes it easy to digest and use. Teens can be challenging and Josh knows teens! I found this book very helpful in understanding the motivation behind some of my kid's behavior. Easy to read, easy to find the topics that concern you, a stress reducer! Thanks Josh, for writing a book that really hits home and actually helps with some of the sticky questions about teens. Love the book, would give it more stars if I could.

Beverly Viello was 21 years old and had just graduated from college with both Web Design and Business degrees . She had never had a boyfriend , never been kissed , never drank alcohol and was still a virgin. She had applied for several jobs and finally was hired at Golden Star Media owned by Mr. Fitzgerald. He was known to be almost impossible to work for , his assistants usually only lasted a week . Bev was to be his assistant , but she did a fantastic job and lasted alot longer than anyone else . So much happens in this very great story of a young girl and an older man finding their happiness. I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it .

Enjoyed reading this book and reading about the characters and their story. Looking forward to reading more from this author.

It’s okay story! It was not what I expected! I was thinking that the man had a child and the wife either passed away or they were divorced. So the man fell in love with another woman, but it was something else, completely different from the title.

I really enjoyed this book. The characters were interesting and the story line was good. I couldn’t put this book down until I finished it.

A new author and a disappointing read. The more I read, the more mistakes I found until I was thoroughly irritated. Why does an author put out a book in this condition. I found over 30 mistakes and none were hard to find. The errors were blatant- anyone could find them if they actually read the book. Sentences left hanging and not finished; many, many wrong words ie Did he really thing he could order me?? aren’t instead of don’t, you hold a tight ship?? Most of these pretty much make the whole sentence nonsencial so they aren’t hard to find; words missing from a sentence; wrong Grammer choices; and, the banter between Fitz and Bev much of the time didn’t make any sense. Unfortunately, the ending was so abrupt I thought I was missing a chapter. This book needed to be read for errors and content making this read frustrating and disappointing.

I received this book with the understanding that I could leave a voluntary and honest review. In this book we meet Beverly "Bev" Viello and Fritz Fitzgerald. Bev busted but and graduated early from college with a degree and top honors in web design and business management. However because of this people think she is to young and won't give her a chance. That is why getting the assistant job at Golden Stars Media Empire has her excited. She knows this is a step in the right direction as long as she isn't working for the CEO. Rumors have it that no one has lasted more than 2 weeks with him. So when she finds she is not only working for the man himself she knows she has a lot to prove. Fitz isn't looking for a woman who has no brain working for him. That is why Bev is such an enigma to him. She is all business and he wants to do something to shake her up like she is doing to him. Can these two find that they are each other's HEA or will they end up driving each other nuts? This is an amazing story. This is not a taboo story it is a story with a certain kink. It does have its ups and downs I really want to tell you about. However I don't want to ruin it for any other readers. I will say this book will have you hooked from the first word to the very end. I would highly recommend it to anyone and everyone.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. I was a little disappointed in this book. Although overall the book was a great read, based on the title i expected a different story line. The end was very disappointing. It seemed to end abruptly almost like the writer just wanted to be done with it. The book has a great storyline and is an easy read....just know that its not really a baby romance!

I love that Beverly is a down to earth real woman, curves and all. She is independent and is up for the challenges that Mr. Fitzgerald sets fir her. She surprises everyone by outlasting his previous assistants because she isn't going to be goaded into quitting her first real job Her boss is a demanding CEO wants to see how far he can push her.Mr. Fitzgerald sets high expectations for his assistant and expects everything to be perfect. He is pleasantly surprised that Bev had looked up his company beforehand and knew about how demanding he was. He was also very attracted to her because she wasn't some fragile, stick of a woman. She had curves that he could've drowned himself in. He tried to behave around her, but couldn't resist her and the sassy mouth of hers. This was a good read. Their banter was fun to read and see what was happening between them before they even realized it themselves.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Meditating on our ancestors, as Wagner’s own story shows, can suggest better ways of being ourselves.”—Maud Newton, The New York Times Book Review“Sincere and instructive . . . This timely reflection on American identity, with a bonus exposé of DNA ancestry testing, deserves a wide audience.”—Library Journal“The narrative is part Mary Roach–style participation-heavy research, part family history, and part exploration of existential loneliness. . . . The journey is worth taking.”—Kirkus Reviews“[A] ruminative exploration of ethnicity and identity . . . Wagner’s odyssey is an effective riposte to anti-immigrant politics.”—Publishers Weekly “Alex Wagner is brilliant and hilarious. I bought this book because, like so many other samples I have downloaded, it started off so well. It was interesting and well written. But once on the hook for the price of the book, it was all downhill. It’s like the author and her editor just stopped trying.Unending chapters full of tedious paragraphs full of rhetorical questions to herself? No thanks. Big mystery with a shocking reveal? Nope. None of the results she gets from dna tests are even remotely shocking or interesting. The blurbs for this book are very misleading. Don’t waste your money.

I liked this book very much. Alex’s personality shines through nicely, it’s a fun, nerdy wit. I agree with some of the other reviewers that there isn’t a big “a-ha” revelatory moment, but that is also the point. We do identify and identify with race, but the conclusions we may draw from anything we go out looking for may fall flat, whether it’s delving into history books, or getting shaky science DNA tests. We are all on earth biding time till death, it’s a personal journey, whatever we are to make of it, whatever history we want to tie ourselves to, whatever history we want to make for ourselves, it’s up to us.I like the idea another reviewer had, that Alex could go on to become a Burmese historian, there is a lot of unknown there. Definitely a lot of work!

Everybody should read this. A bracing corrective to all the artificial divisions so many of us have erected, and for what?

It’s a story about finding yourself in America. Looking back at the past and realizing that you’re, instead, in the present and the future.Honestly, didn’t find it too insightful. I didn’t really care to read her adventures through archives and continents, but I stuck through it and found her quiet acceptance of being American and metropolitan. Okay. Sure, I guess.Read it because Obama said it was “a thoughtful, beautiful meditation on what makes us who we are and the values and ideals that bind us together as Americans.” I found it more a rambling book about research methods, she’s grasping for more and there’s nothing there. Nonetheless, she talks about things I’ve been thinking about recently, and her prose is good.

Our search for roots takes us deep into the history of the world. I found myself fascinated by Burmese nationalism and the Franco-Prussian War as these things affected everyday citizens. A Howard Zinn way of looking at history. And the delve into the science behind DNA testing was helpful. Most of all I like her conclusions as she answers the questions “Who are we? To whom do we belong?”

Seemed to me that she reviewed the same stories again and again. It was a slow read. But an interesting topic.

Follow Alex Wagner as she traces her ancestry to Europe and Burma

Brilliant exploration of who we are based on family stories. Then exploring the realities of our past histories and current definition of being here in America. How we all must come to terms with self knowledge and self respect to be there for others...for a greater cause of affirming each other.
