First and foremost I was not aware Mr.Bove had put another book out on the same subject before this book. I learned so much more from a brilliant technician at Apple then I ever could from this book. I feel like it was a waste of time to read this book! Perhaps Mr. Bove should make it common knowledge that he has a prior book on this same subject. If one doesn't know a thing about Ipods they need to at least read his first book. I don't know if it would be any better? This book is just laying around my house somewhere. Another book to just get rid of. Sherry K

I purchased my 1st touch 3 months (it's now May 2015) ago with no knowledge of what a touch could do. This book literally schooled me. From cover to cover I learned from almost every page. I strongly suggest if you need the basics do not pass up this book. Enough said.

A good book. I'm going to buy a copy of the book for my sister-in-law. We both have iPod Touches but don't use a teeny portion of the capabilities because we don't know what the functions are or how to use them. This book should actually be given (by Apple) to anyone who buys an iPod touch. Otherwise, "Dummies" would be better off to just buy a Nano and call it good.

This is what I needed.

I don't have an ipod.

Good book but out of date now.

Bought two of these as gifts for people who own iPod touches but were reluctant to use the devices to their potential. I read the book before I gave it to one of them. I found in it nothing that I had not discovered myself while playing with my iPod touch, but saw that it could be really helpful for someone who was less inclined to touch their touch. I think I was a dummy to think that someone would want to read a book about something that doesn't capture their imagination.

This book proved very helpful to me after I received my Apple iPOD as a gift. There are plenty of straightforward tips in this book. It is written in everyday language to clearly explain device features and operating tips. Delivery of the book was timely and the price was reasonable.

You may have heard of Dale Carnegie's "How to Win Freinds and Influence Others", Robert Kiyosaki's "Rich Dad Poor Dad" or "Think and Grow Rich" by Napolean Hill. And while these books caused me to radically change the way in key areas of my life, they could all be encompassed by this book and then some. (I have given this review one-star solely for the purpose of helping it stand out and potentially reach more people.)"Rules for a Knight" an absolute gem. If you have come to the conclusion that you want to be fit, be a millionaire, or have a great relationship with your significant other, you've probably realized that the change you seek must come from within. This book is the best roadmap to get there that I've ever seen (and I read LOTS of 'self-help' books); it provides the what and the why to nearly every internal aspect. The reason I love this book is it doesn't just re-present the childhood dogma, it JUSTIFIES them. Ever wondered why it's bad to lie, even if you know you'll never get caught? This book explains. Ever wondered how to implement the phrase "forgive and forget"? The book explains why forgiveness is NOT forgetting, and how to restore your inner peace. Ever wondered WHY people always say "money doesn't matter"? This book explains what you gain when you give (counter-intuitive, I know.).Even better, the short beautiful book presents all of its points through parables. Meaning in NEVER gets boring! It really is a succinct collection of interesting medieval stories that make a point. I have read this book twice so far and after buying each of my future kids a copy, plan to read it another fifty more before I die. Very rarely is the cost of a book justified in my eyes, but this book is worth MORE than double what it's selling for.I guarantee you will instantly have 10% better life if you read this book thoughtfully. Still on the fence? BUY IT! Do whatever you need to do to read it (pirate it, barter for it, borrow it from the local library etc.)

This book is a Treasure. Clothbound. A ribbon for use as a bookmark. Beautifully illustrated black and white drawings at the beginning of each chapter. Easy to read font!! And most charming of all, the perfectly palm sized four by six inches. Publishing Houses take note! We need more books like this! Reading a book is experiential. And this book is pure Love.

Purchased for a college graduation gift for a male friend of family. From page 1, we loved it so much, we read the entire book while we were supposed to be wrapping it. Great gift. Great words to live by.

A code of honor laced within touching tales and easy reading. Just about everything you need to know about how to grow up to be a good person, or a knight, is tucked away in these pages. As a grown-up, I found myself re-reading passages several times, thinking about how I could further integrate these themes in my own life.Love, loss, friendship, life, death, all this is covered and so much more. This is a perfect gift for anyone who has young children, boy and girls! Ethan Hawke does an excellent job making the rules of Knighthood applicable to all. I already passed along my copy to a little boy who will need it and will probably be picking up another one for myself soon!As far as the binding, beautiful. I'm a sucker for a solid hardcover book and this book delivers. It's small, so it fits in the palm of your hand or your back pocket easily. One might also say it would fit perfectly into the hands of a child. I should also mention that 100% of the royalties from this book go to organizations that help kids overcome learning disabilities.I cannot recommend this book enough. All can learn something from this tome of tales, child and grownup alike. A world with a few more knights is a world I could love to live in.

Great read to pass along or share with a children, a young boy in particular. Has implied morals, virtues and ethics that our society needs to return to AND FOLLOW! A quick read in excerpts if on the go. Invaluable lessons and surprisingly very good. I highly recommend the purchase and I am to understand there is truth to this journey within Ethan Hawke's family history.

I am so excited about this book. I teach first grade and am using it as the basis for a month-long project on knights and how to behave with honor. The kids are excited to be learning about knights, but the real gem is the lessons they are learning about how to behave and make good decisions.Highly recommend this book!

My husband and I read this to our son every night. We are reading it to him for the second time. This is a good teaching book for both young and adults. It is a knights last letter to his children. In it he explains the virtues of solitude, humility, gratitude, pride, cooperation, friendship, and much more. Each one has a teaching/learning memory attached to it, some children might not understand all the meanings. That is why I suggest that it be read often. We can all use the reminder of these rules.

Its a short book, so I could easily see someone reading through the entire thing in a single sitting. I didnt want to read the entire thing in one night so I have been reading 2-3 "chapters" a night before I go to bed. Ive made it about half way through and its a really great read with great quotes and stories to explain each topic. It also looks really nice aesthetically so even once im done I will probably leave it on my nightstand or have it be visible somewhere in my room.

The Gauntlet CHAPTER ONE FARAH HAD HER BACK pressed against the seat of the living room sofa, keeping a wary eye on the door as more party guests filed in while she played marbles with Ahmad. “My turn, Farah apu!” Ahmad shouted with seven-year-old enthusiasm, startling strangers. “My turn!” He sat beside her on the floor, a box of chenna murki placed in front of him. He offered her a bite of the soft, tender, marble-sized morsels of sweet cheese, which he’d chomp by the handful. “Want one?” he asked, offering her a piece. Farah wrinkled her nose at the treat. She didn’t do sweets, not even the Bangladeshi kind that the rest of her family devoured. She liked to think of herself as a bit of a rebel, at least in this small way. “Don’t you want to try some of the snacks Ma made? Samosas or pakoras. Or do you want to talk to Essie and Alex?” Farah asked. She was always in convincing mode when it came to Ahmad. “We haven’t seen them in a while.” “He wants to play with you, Farah, that’s all,” Essie said, looking down at Farah from her seat on the sofa. Farah’s only other friend, Alex, was seated in an armchair nearby, running a hand through his thick curls, his nose firmly planted in a book. He hadn’t spoken a word to her, or anyone else, since the quiet greeting he’d spared when he came through the door. While Alex had never been a big talker, this indifference was new. Today was the first time Farah had seen either Essie or Alex in months. It felt as though their friendship had been . . . not dented, not shattered, nothing so terrible and threatening and nearly beyond repair. Just a little loosened out of its socket. “Let’s play. You and me,” Ahmad said. “You can have the good marbles this time.” Farah smiled at him. Ahmad was only seven, she had to remind herself when she got frustrated. Just as she had lost friends in their move from Queens to the Upper East Side, he had lost his friends too. Friends for Ahmad were harder to come by, given his issues. Even on her birthday, when she felt the universe owed her gentle understanding that she didn’t always want to play with her baby brother, she couldn’t deny him and his gap-toothed smile. “Okay, one more game,” she said, drawing a chalk circle on the floor. He arranged the marbles in a plus sign. “Me first.” “Of course.” He pressed his knuckle to the floor and shot a finger forward. His favorite cat’s-eye marble struck the others, expertly scattering them. Three flew out of the circle, and one hit a nearby shoe. Aunt Zohra. She hovered over Farah and Ahmad for a moment, then picked up the box of sweets from the floor, popping a few chenna murki into her mouth. “My cheese marbles!” Ahmad shouted, leaping for the box. Aunt Zohra’s thin lips formed what passed for a smile. On anyone else it might be a grimace. She was scarecrow thin and fence-post tall. She wore a salwar kameez without any embroidery, unlike the fancy, glittering mirrors that adorned Farah’s own sky blue hem and long sleeves. She handed Ahmad the box, and he greedily scooped up more sweets. “Why don’t you join your guests, Farah?” “I would, but . . .” “I’m winning, Zohra Masi,” Ahmad explained. “Ahmad,” Aunt Zohra said gently, “I need to celebrate with the birthday girl, and so do the others. We must not keep her guests waiting.” Aunt Zohra was pretty good with Ahmad, considering how infrequently Farah and Ahmad saw her; Aunt Zohra mostly kept to herself. And even when she visited the family, she didn’t talk much. Her mind always seemed to be elsewhere. “They’re not really my guests. Mostly aunties, and kids from my new school. I’d rather stay here.” Farah thought that Aunt Zohra might understand. After all, she wasn’t much for socializing either. Aunt Zohra flashed Farah another smile. “Well, it is your birthday. You should have some fun. My gift for you is waiting upstairs. We can open it after the party. I think you’ll find a good use for it though. Better than I ever did.” “Is the present in your room, Zohra Masi? Can I get it? Can I open it?” Ahmad aimed a kick at Farah’s shin, which, from years of practice, she dodged. Today’s tantrum was nothing new. Trying to avoid just this scenario, Baba and Ma gave Ahmad gifts even on Farah’s birthday to keep his antics to a minimum. He balled up his fists and bellowed, “Please! Please! Let me open it, Farah apu.” When he reached this point of excitement, you couldn’t even see his eyes anymore. He squeezed them so tight, folding them away in the same manner he might if he were wishing on birthday candles or trying to compress himself out of existence. For a second, Farah thought his disappearing wouldn’t be such a bad thing: calling down a goblin king to whisk him off into the deep, dark depths of a fairy labyrinth or sidestepping himself into another dimension. Still, it was Farah and Ahmad, Ahmad and Farah. She didn’t know what life would be without him. “It’s a present for me. For my birthday. You got your present earlier. Those shiny new marbles,” Farah said. She knew that Ahmad’s ADHD meant he couldn’t always control himself. Baba said Ahmad had moments where he was trapped in his own overwhelming emotions, like being lost in a frustrating maze, and Farah had to be patient until he found his way out again. Baba was in the dining room with Uncle Musafir talking about the new offices his software business would be settling into. He did not have to deal with Ahmad or his mazelike mind right this second. “Ahmad, I have something to show you,” Aunt Zohra said, flashing her Turkish puzzle rings. They glimmered in the light, delicate on Aunt Zohra’s long, lanky fingers. His eyes grew big. They had never played with Turkish puzzle rings before, but as a game-loving family, they had of course heard of them. Each ring was made up of interlocking thinner rings, forming a beautiful intricate design, like a series of golden waves. Aunt Zohra winked at Farah over his head. “Wait! My marbles first!” Ahmad skittered away like one of his precious marbles, darting under a nearby couch to retrieve them. Aunt Zohra trailed after him. Farah felt a guilty, giddy rush of relief. Aunt Zohra coaxed Ahmad out and toward the kitchen, where Ma was no doubt keeping busy. Farah watched her mother work through the pass-through window: She stirred the pots brimming with simmering sauces and curries and steaming rice, picked up each spice jar carefully lined up on the counter, and sprinkled the bright, colorful aromatics over the food. The front door opened and closed, and more and more of the kids from her new school filed in through the doorway. Most of them were accompanied by their mothers, with a few harried-looking nannies bouncing younger siblings on their hips and locating odd corners to deposit overflowing diaper bags. They waved and said nice, polite, meaningless things. Farah knew she should go greet her guests. It was the right thing for a good Bangladeshi girl to do. But most of these kids were still strangers to her, and she was a stranger to them. On her birthday, she wanted to avoid having the kind of small talk that happens between not-really-friends. She especially didn’t want to discuss her scarf. It was a question that Farah had never heard at her old school. She hadn’t been the only hijaabi in her class in Queens. There, everyone had known the proper name for it and did not try to tug at the end or ask how her hair looked underneath it or if she even had hair. Now she went to a school in downtown Manhattan, where she was the only hijaabi in her class. Farah moved herself to sit on the couch by Essie, who had busied herself with a game on her phone. Last year Farah would have had no problem breaking the silence and suggesting a fun thing to do. Now she felt unsure. Should she suggest they play Monopoly? They had spent hours playing board games last year. But today the suggestion felt little-kiddish. What if her friends didn’t enjoy board games anymore? Should she ask about school? Or would that only bring attention to the fact that she wasn’t there? And anyway, no kid wanted to talk about school. Farah’s thoughts were interrupted by Essie. “Let’s do something. . . . I’m bored,” she said. “Me too,” said Farah. She immediately felt awful. This was her party, and her friends were already bored. “Can we open some of your presents?” offered Alex, looking up from his book. “Maybe you got something cool.” “My mom probably won’t want me opening any gifts until after the party. It would look rude taking them off the table around all the guests.” “What about the gift your aunt got you? Didn’t she say it was upstairs?” asked Essie. Farah thought back to the presents Aunt Zohra had given her over the years: a set of fruit patterned knives from the local BJ’s for Farah to “learn her colors,” clothes in the wrong size and in odd, erratic patterns from unfamiliar Bengali boutiques back in Dhaka. The kind of presents you’d expect from an absentminded grandmother at Christmas, ones offered without any particular meaning or thought. “It’s nothing exciting, I’d guess,” she said. “But we might as well check it out.” Farah, Alex, and Essie grabbed some snacks and headed upstairs, Essie balancing two plates piled high with samosas, fried vegetable pakoras, and one or two overly syrupy sweets that would no doubt spoil their appetite, Alex taking up the rear and anxiously peering over his shoulder to make sure their escape wasn’t noticed. Farah’s aunt was staying in a guest room, and when they opened the door, they found Ahmad holding a square package wrapped in plain brown paper. “That’s my gift!” Farah ran in and took it out of his hands. “How did you escape Aunt Zohra?” Not that Farah needed an answer. Ahmad was really good at wandering off without detection. It was one of the reasons Farah kept such a close eye on him whenever they went out. Ahmad stood up on the bed and started jumping. “Open it! Open it!” Farah didn’t know what was inside. Still, she was overcome by a feeling of something new, something strange, something hovering in the air, as fragrant and weighty as the steam off Ma’s cooking pots. It piqued her curiosity. She peeled back the paper, pushing away Ahmad’s greedy hands as she worked. Soon a polished wooden corner emerged. Finally, the entire thing slid out of the paper into Farah’s hands. She held it up to the light as Alex craned his head over her shoulder. It was a game. A board game, most likely. It had the same square shape of a regular game box, but it was sturdier, antique-looking. The dark wood was emblazoned with carved images: palaces with domes and elegant spirals and high arches, a fearsome spider with its fangs horrendously large and carefully rendered, an elegantly curved lizard, a sparkling minaret, and a wasp-waisted hourglass—and at the very center of its cover, in broad letters, was written THE GAUNTLET OF BLOOD AND SAND. Essie’s eyes widened as she leaned forward to look, her mouth a small O of delight and excitement. “Wow,” Alex breathed. Ahmad jumped up and down with excitement. “I want it, Farah apu,” he said. “I want it!” “What is it?” Essie said. Farah’s hand paused over the wooden cover. “I . . . don’t know what this is.” Before she even finished the sentence, the game started to vibrate.

Beautifully writing, delightful characters, and such entertaining adventure all packed into a wonderful middle grade book. I would suggest this book not only to my younger cousins, but to my friends, my aunts, teachers and students. It's such a fun story with a clever and strong lead character in Farah. Her love for her brother (even though they have sibling issues like any brother and sister would) is so heart-warming.Her interactions with her family and culture reminds me of my own big, loud, comfortable (but sometimes nosey) extended family. And that makes it so real and familiar and relatable. The writing is so flowing but the adventure is so griping. I wasn't sure if I wanted to be awed or excited by the story half the time (probably both at the same time).Definitely a wonderful read. Worth the buy and worth sharing widely.

So this whole time I've been thinking I've wrote a review for this wonderfully fun book and I don't know where my head went. Anyways! You deserve to know how I felt! So! Farah was such a fun character. I enjoyed reading from her pov so much throughout this story. It's a middle grade fantasy about 3 friends in New York getting sucked into a game board, much like Jumanji with a Middle Eastern flare because it's a Muslim cast of characters. Also it's own voices so that's super cool too. I loved reading the family element, especially between siblings, Farah and Ahmed fight and love each other much like I did with my own brother when we were young and sometimes still now. Brothers can be amazing and Farah's was her inspiration to jump head first into a game to save them. I loved it. Essie was the strength, the pusher, the one that jumped right in head first and showed no fears until she did but it just proved how much stronger she really is. She is kind of sarcastic and at times even rude but a solid character all around. Alex was the shy one, the timid one, and also the brains. A guy like Alex is one I can understand because I was the kid with the book under the tree refusing to come out. All their strengths were show cased and the characters were really fleshed out, I enjoyed it thoroughly. I need more middle grade in my life. The plot was interesting, the challenges were fun, there is nothing not to like about this adorable book.

I have never been more grateful for a protagonist that knows how to survive a fantasy novel. In this case, Farah is aware of stories where younger brothers disappear and games come to life. Even so, her aunt's (accidental) birthday present of a magical board game catches her off-guard. Usually Farah has to play games with her baby brother Ahmad all the time and let him win. When she tries to play with her friends instead of with her brother, a spoiled and sulky Ahmad insists on entering the game's magical world. To save him, Farah and her friends must enter and beat the game. If they lose, they stay within it forever. There is just one problem, however; the game doesn't play fair. Farah has to handle a cheating opponent, and a constantly shifting wonder. The Gauntlet is a lot of fun to read, and a rollicking adventure. Rather than a morality tale, since Farah is already a magnificent big sister and Ahmad's too little to learn from his brattiness, we get an exploration of Bengali culture and temporal consequences. The character changes are subtler, where Farah has to rally her friends and develop nerves of steel. Aunt Zorah can only watch from the outside, while the adults trapped within the game hope they can finally leave their artificial home. Sometimes we just need a grand high adventure, that teaches us more about our world.

Perfect for middle grade adventure and fantasy fans, especially for readers who love The Land of Stories series by Chris Colfer, and for board game fans of Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library by Chris Grabenstein. I greatly appreciated Farah's strong female lead and the Bangladeshi cultural influences/references that make this a refreshing addition to the middle grade fantasy world. The only cons are that there were times when the dialogue felt a bit flat, and Farah's friends Alex and Essie could have possibly had deeper characters and more involvement in the story. These are minor, however, and I look forward to reading more from Riazi - perhaps in future installments of Farah's story?

An excellent book with great characters, the story kept me on my toes and crossing my fingers the whole time. Karuna Riazai has crafted a great story with nice tidbits that make the Muslim main character relatable and interesting, and kept me googling little details to learn more about the culture she grew up in. I learned things and enjoyed this book a lot, and can't wait for Riazai to release another book!

Beautifully written with lots of fun alliteration and a great example of the sibling bond. Riazi masterfully interweaves characters' backgrounds and memories into the present adventure. It's exciting to see a MG book with a Muslim main character - especially a headscarf wearing girl - that is allowed to be a young girl watching out for her brother, acknowledging what being Muslim does to the story, but not making it what the story is about.

The Gauntlet was a rollicking debut...I really loved the new take on the "getting sucked into the game" trope. Tropes have a bad connotation in today's literary world, but it's all about how the author decides to tackle them. Riazi brings a fresh, engaging, and spellbinding new take on the idea, and boy, does she deliver. A wonderful debut jam packed with heart, humor, and action.

The Gauntlet is one of my favorite debut novels from this year - how often do we get to read an adventure story reminiscent of Jumanji with a hijaabi heroine? Riazi has a great sense of place, tension, and dialogue, and has created an all-ages adventure that will satisfy younger readers, provide representation for characters who don't often receive it outside of narrow and stereotyped windows, and give older readers a chance to re-enter imaginative worlds. Given that this is Riazi's first published novel, I think we can expect great things from her in the future!

Loved that book! So meticulous, so entertaining. Absolute must-read.

An interesting and fascinating book, full of information about a fascinating time. It's bit boring at the beginning unless you are interested in the character he talks about, then it starts with facts, name and fascinating stories of less known name of the dotcom time.I liked the style of writing and the book kept my attention till the last page.Recommended! Many thanks to Grove Atlantic and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.

I'm really torn about how to review this book. On the one hand, it offers an incredibly valuable look back at the 90's dotcom boom times, an era that deserves much more attention than it receives. On the other hand, a lot of the most valuable analysis comes only after a quixotic first-person quest to locate and understand the unknowable -- the enigmatic founder of Psuedo, Josh Harris. To me, the book suffers from the same thing that Pseudo did: an excellent premise that ultimately gets sidetracked by an obsession with celebrity/fame. Ultimately whether Harris is telling the truth or not, or whether he is a genius, or whether he is an artist, is irrelevant in my mind. Harris isn't the point. Those of use who watched and engaged with Pseudo were part of something bigger than one person, until it suddenly disappeared forever. I finished the book having a lot more questions about the Pseudo community itself, and how the Internet has lost so much of what initially made it such an exciting, unpredictable place. I thank the author for prompting me to ask these questions myself, but I would have also loved to focus more on why Pseudo mattered rather than deciphering exactly what had transpired in those crazy, early Internet years.

Moondust is one of my favourite reads of all time, so when I heard there was a new book out by Andrew Smith I bought it - and it's just so nice to be in the company of this author again.Without giving too much of the game away, Smith takes us on a journey that starts in London, then swerves abruptly to Ethiopia, then on to New York, then off to Utah... anywhere that he can find JOSH.It's a wild ride as he tries to track down one of the strangest characters our modern world has created.Like I say, I don't want to give too much of the game away... but the person he's after is Josh Harris. An oddball, possibly autistic, geekus who ruled the party-scene of nineties New York, much as Warhol had a generation earlier. His early experiments in `living in public' (his term) prefigure Big Brother, Facebook and any other `social media' invasion you can think of.I couldn't believe I hadn't heard of this guy. But more than that, I couldn't believe that I had forgotten a time when this didn't exist. For the first time in years I stopped and thought about the first time I had used the internet and when that was. I suddenly realized how much the world has changed.`May you live in interesting times'.The gift of this book is to remind us that we do. Smith charts the history of the dotcom boom-bust-reboom and offers us a space to think about its implicationsI wouldn't say that at the end of the book I had answers to these questions. But I had, at least, started to think about it - and when you do think about it, it is amazing. You may not be of a like-mind to me, but if you are, in chapter 20 you will find out something about (*)ankers shenanigans - and how they financed the dotcom `bust' - that throws yet more perspective on the times in which we live.

I bought three of Steven's books - this one, "rhythm Changes", and "Jazz Standards" - and they are all excellent. Lots of introductory method books show what to play in a single measure to get from one chord to the next, and that is a good place to start. But the next step is to create a line that is melodic and interesting over the whole song form. That's what these books do really well. The underlying theory is clearly presented, and the transcribed lines show how to put the theory in a useful musical context. Well worth the price.

Excellent book to get you grounded in walking bass lines. Clear technical explanations, good examples.Recommended.

This book is awesome. Quite simply. It introduces the main concepts behind the walking lines in a clear, concise way, and then gives you page upon page of great examples of walking bass lines in all 12 keys, and no two are identical. Also works quite well as a basic sight reading companion.

All of Steve's book are great. This is the third one I've purchased. However, had trouble downloading the play-along files. Not so with the other books.

This is by far the most concise and exhaustive series of its kind. I highly recommend this and the other four books as well. Steven was very quick to respond to my email requesting the backing tracks.

Must have item to jazz bass students. It can help to advance reading music. Seriously....

This book had a lot more information and was way more advanced than I expected. It's the most comprehensive jazz bass book I've found to date. I've been working out of several books for the last year or so, but this is going to be my focus for the foreseeable future. I will definitely be getting the others in the series.

Review

“With a kid-friendly format featuring brightly colored text and cartoon drawings, The Survival Guide for Kids with Autism Spectrum Disorders (And Their Parents) is a well-organized, go-to resource packed with solid information and advice for kids and adults.”—Curriculum Connections, School Library Journal“Finally, a book that relates to kids on the spectrum because it incorporates actual stories from their lives in their own words! I loved the format, readability, and the content . . . [a] big thumbs up to [the] authors for tackling a tough subject and giving voice to the very group it impacts—kids with autism.”—Louise Sattler, school psychologist, contributor to Education.com“Verdick and Reeve’s guide manages to skillfully balance on the edge between information-heavy academic books and too-simplistic books for young children. They have produced an informative, practical guide for late elementary and middle school students that neither talks down to them nor floats above their heads.”—VOYA“Pick it up for its emphasis on self-acceptance and its A-to-Z nature.”—Scholastic Parent & Child  “A treasured resource for families looking for help in successfully working through some of the problems faced by higher-functioning children with ASD. Buy two copies; one is sure to get worn out with use.”—School Library Journal“This book is designed to be a resource for the entire ‘team of helpers’ rooting for every child trying to reach [his or her] full potential, including parents, teachers, friends, and support staff. The overarching tone is one of openness, making no social or physical facet of ASD taboo. Real problems are answered with real solutions shared by kids. Interesting anecdotes and cartoon illustrations are presented alongside invaluable tools . . . [T]he authors lay a strong foundation in giving kids the ultimate skill of self-advocacy.”—Booklist“With so many children being diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders, numerous new advice books are becoming available. This is one of the more useful ones . . . It explains in clear language strategies children can train themselves to employ to improve functioning in the neurotypical world and why these might be useful. Generally useful and easily readable . . . with lots of practical advice, especially appropriate for grade-schoolers and their caregivers.”—Kirkus“Filled with useful, accessible advice; appealingly colorful, and jauntily illustrated, The Survival Guide for Kids with Autism Spectrum Disorders should be one of the first books a family buys after a diagnosis. I wish it had been around when my own son was the right age for it, but I’m glad it’s here now; it will be invaluable to so many children and their families.”—Claire LaZebnik, coauthor of Overcoming Autism and Growing Up on the Spectrum

My son was diagnosed in late elementary school with high functioning ASD, and we were hoping for a way to help him understand the disorder. With that goal in mind, I think the value of this product really rests with the child it is being used for. Much of the information was interesting and well-organized, and the strategies and explanations it offers could possibly be quite effective for some kids. As the title implies, this book is geared primarily towards the child himself, and much of this information is fairly standard knowledge for a parent who has been through the full diagnostic process for ASD. However, I can see how some caregivers would also benefit from the ideas about how to help their children recognize specific peer social cues, to convey the importance of self-care and to implement some of these coping strategies. Overall, though, I felt this would be more helpful for an Asperger's or ASD child who has a somewhat better awareness that he/she is different, feels confused or frustrated by it, and is more interested in (or can be coaxed a bit into) actually attempting to bridge some of those differences. (I realize much of the autism diagnosis hinges on kids who don't recognize or care about other's perceptions of them, but there are certainly some who do or who can be encouraged to try to do so.) For the child who truly doesn't remotely recognize or care (that word seems harsher than I'm looking for, but I can't quite think of a better one right now) about those differences, these explanations and strategies are of little use. In my house, we often feel powerless to help our son, as we see his very patient circle of classmates attempt to process his outbursts or characteristic social immaturity. These kids want to bring him in, even as he doesn't realize he's still standing on the outside. When he fails to respond to their efforts to reach out to him as they continue to grow and mature, he is inherently starting to see fewer openings to play and interact or participate in their after-school social activities. We hoped we could use this to gently improve his recognition of their efforts. But in our case, he truly doesn't see or care about these cues or the benefits that recognizing and responding to them might bring him. While we wish we could have used this to help him, we are thankful he is comfortable with who he is, and perhaps that is the best thing we can hope for for any of our children--AS or not.

Overall, I really liked this book. It's hard to find good books about kids with Autism. My complaints with it are that it focuses mainly on boys and on school situations. I realize that there's a reason for that (with more boys diagnosed and kids spending the majority of their days in school) - however, I have a daughter on the spectrum and she's homeschooled - so a lot of the situations were not the kind that my daughter encounters on a regular basis. Also, there was an emphasis on sensory seeking behavior - and my daughter is a sensory avoider, so that confused her. I feel like this is a really hard topic to write a book about, since Autism expresses so differently in different people. I would really love a book about girls on the spectrum especially. It's very hard for my daughter to find peers she can relate to...and this book sort of reinforced that, unfortunately. The book also focuses a lot on Autism as a disorder and a "problem" - and also (like another reviewer pointed out) - emphasizes medication. I don't like reinforcing that my daughter is "different" because she has a disorder . I would have liked to see more focus on the positive aspects of having Autism and how we can really celebrate those differences without having to necessarily fit into mainstream neurotypical society. I guess I'm for neurodiversity, and acceptance of different ways of being - and I felt like this book was more about how to Survive (like the title says!) in a Neurotypical world.

This book is really for high functioning kids BUT with that said, I have read it myself to see if I can understand it myself before giving it to my son. I highly recommend this book. So much information and broken down in a way the child with ASD and Parents can understand. I'm huge on not having my son be treated any differently but I also KNOW he requires a little different approach. I cant wait to share this with him and also tell my family to purchase it as well as they too cannot fully understand what ASD means for him.

Every family should read this even if no one is one the spectrum. Extremely well-written by two moms/ doctors both with ASD sons, who've worked with lots of spectrum kids. Contains so many true stories and solutions that it helps every reader to understand ASD. Now that diagnosis is more common, everyone knows someone with autism so read this book especially if you are a guidance counselor, teacher, school administrator, parent of kid who knows ASD kids. And this is an easy, colorful read with cool drawings and side notes so its fun to flip through after reading, you'll remember the stories told by kids dealing with spectrum. This is upbeat and positive, own it and enjoy!

I have learned so much and confirmed a lot of what I always suspected with this book. What I especially love is the easy language used. I have read or started reading books & articles on Autism and stopped immediately because of the vocabulary, I felt I had to have a PhD in order to understand them. And, I also love the fact that my 10 year old son can read, relate and understand this book. I could see on his face as we were reading when a situation struck close to home. I'm glad that he can see for himself that it's not just happening to him and that his differences are not bad things. Thank you ladies and Amazon for having this book available to me

I bought this book for my son to read who has Aspergers and just entered middle school. I like the format - it is easy to read and appeals to kids. It is also direct at providing the social cues that most people pick up subconsciously but those with aspergers do not, and explains what the cues may look like, what they may mean and how (and why) to respond to them for a positive social exchange. For my son, that is priceless! Even though we have many repeat discussions on his interactions with others (which can sometimes be exhausting for me) it is awesome that he can pick up the book as many times as he needs to reread and digest what matters to him.

★★★★★ Expert authors, Charles Dyer and Mark Tobey magnificently explained how the "Isis Crisis" emerged onto world events. They used history, current events, and Biblical prophesy including Daniel 9, Ezekiel 38, and Isaiah 32-32 to illustrate this. The book helped me to understand how ISIS/ISIL affects the Middle East conflicts, anti-Israel sentiments, and desires for material gain (gas, oil, and water). NOt for the faint of heart, we a left with hope at the end of this highly-recommended book.

This is an excellent small book. It gives a great but concise history of the Middle East and a really good explanation of the various groups vying for control there. It ends with a message to Christians to nonetheless be compassionate with individuals.

This is a really good book that helps you understand more fully what is going on in the Middle East and how it has evolved to where it is now. I'm a big fan of Charlie Dyer, who understands that part of the world better than most. This book doesn't leave you in despair but leaves you with hope, reminding us that God is still on his throne and still in control of all that goes on in our world.

Very well written. There is so much history to the Middle East region, and the author sorted out the various sects and tribes to explain their differences. The best message is that no matter what, God is in charge. His plan will prevail.

This book is very easy to understand. It explains all the history behind our problems today in the Middle East. I highly recommend if you want to understand what is happening now in Middle East.

Perfect for someone who wants to grasp the origin of problems in the Middle East. I did not know the difference between the Sunnis and Shiites. It gave me an appreciation for the complexity of the problems in that area.

Good, quick review of the history of the mess we call the Middle East. Not sure I agree with the author's recommendation that as good Christians, we should lay down our lives for ISIS without a fight.

The author is so knowable about his subject and can explain it so well for such a complex situation. Think I understand the real threat that ISIS represents not only to the U.S. But to most of the world. Believe I learned more from this excellent book than listening to all the media talking heads for monhs
