Diana Knightley has done it again. She draws us into the world of Kaitlyn and Magnus and leaves us hanging for more. This isn't a book that can be read stand-alone. You really must know what has happened in the previous 4 books and by the time you are finished you will be dying to find out when Book 6 is published. These characters find a way into the reader's heart and won't let go. You can't help but cheer for them when things are going well and cry with them during the bad times. Whether in the past, the present, or the future you know that these two ar meant to be together. While this book ends on a happy note, the reader can only hope that things don't go too bad in the next installment.

I am so glad this is not the true end of Magnus and Kaitlyn. This series is extremely heart thumping, dynamic and imaginative. I love when authors push the boundaries of imagination. Ms. Knightley does this in spades.I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoys books that include time travel, romance, mysterie, and love that goes the distance!I can't wait for the next installment. This is a series that has to be read in the order written. Also wanted to mention the writing skill of this author. Some books I have to do a lot of skimming because of too many pages of fluff and descriptions. Long empty fluff isn't a problem here. I never skimmed once for fear of missing something important.Definitely five 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 writing.

I have loved watching the characters develop, most especailly Kaitlyn who goes from a very young (maturity-wise) unmarried 23-year-old to the woman in book 5. She has become the 'terrible arse' who is brave and strong and vulnerable and full of love. The relationship between Kaitlyn and Magnus is so good. The fact that they are actually discussing things with one another rather than jumping to conclusions, that they work as a team. I just truly appreciate *seeing* that in a book!I have also enjoyed the growth of the supporting characters. They all just keep on growing on me. Grandma Barb is my favorite and Knightly does such a good job of describing what it is like when a beloved family member has dementia. The Thanksgiving scene captured it perfectly. Now I must wait (again) for the next book!

Once again, Knightly outdid herself. My Magnus. Big sigh. And I'm old enough to be his grandmother. Nevertheless, book number five did not disappoint. I finished it in a couple of days and was even late to work one morning for not wanting to put it down. Loved some of the explanations that played out. And I love how Kaitlyn is growing and maturing so much. A true heroine in every sense of the word. Can't wait to see what happens in book 6. Furthermore, Knightly is awesome at interacting with her fans on Facebook. Nice touch. And the thankyous in the back, further endorsed her commitment to her fans.

Be proud of yourself Diana , you have me sooooo hooked !I really love your characters . I have been reading great books for a very long time , and despite the fact that I read so many books a week .I can't get your books out of my mind . I love their love and challenges . Always a smile and a sigh .

I was crying, smiling and eager to continue reading! Great book .. awesome series! l highly recommend reading all of there books!!

From the very first line in book 1 to the last in book 5, these books captured my interest again and again. The characters will forever live in my heart now and I can barely wait until book 6 is released. I can't compare them to Outlander because they rock whether there was ever an Outlander series or not. The characters are that great. Do yourself a favor. Get the set. You'll be hooked too (and re-reading them again just to get your Kaitlyn and Magnus fix like I am.)

Outlander meets Doctor Who. The settings are fun as a Floridian. People from other places might get a bit confused because the Florida locations are up north so we do get cold.

Review

"A fascinating [story], and exceedingly well told.... What makes this book particularly useful is the way it situates [the Arab-Israeli conflict] within the wider context of the Arabs' long, and still unsuccessful, struggle to come to more equal terms with the West.... An exemplary history."―Economist"An outstanding, gripping and exuberant narrative, full of flamboyant character sketches, witty asides and magisterial scholarship, that explains much of what we need to know about the world today."―Simon Sebag Montefiore, Financial Times"An entertaining, gracefully written, and eye-opening look at a diverse people whose history, culture and character are often badly misunderstood (if not actively distorted) here in the United States. Read it. You'll learn a lot."―Stephen M. Walt, ForeignPolicy.com"[Rogan] provides a prism through which the lay Westerner can view five centuries of tumult, zealotry, and complication.... Deeply erudite and distinctly humane, Rogan consistently plays up (and never papers over) the bountiful East-West parallels."―Atlantic"Readable and reliable, this sweeping survey balances the unity of a coherent story with due attention to detail. As such, Rogan's contribution belongs in the company of the earlier classics by Hitti and Hourani."―Foreign Affairs"Rogan manages the somewhat staggering feat of outlining nearly 500 years of history in a way that is neither cursory nor overwhelming--and is based in the experiences of the people themselves.... [Rogan's] ability to gather and synthesize such a wealth of information, showing both the humanity and malice present on all sides, while neither bowing to nor accepting conventional wisdom, is truly remarkable. It's to be hoped that America's decision makers get their hands on a copy of The Arabs--and take very good notes."―Dallas Morning News"A straightforward, careful primer on Arab political history from the rise of the Ottoman Empire to the forging of modern fundamentalist Islamic entities.... A sweeping history."―Kirkus Reviews"An excellent book.... Eugene Rogan has written an authoritative and wide-ranging history."―Times Literary Supplement"There can be few books better than this one to put in context the ongoing protests throughout the Middle East."―Guardian (UK)"An eloquent grand narrative of optimism and despair.... Rogan's book is evocative, timely and illuminating for the general reader. The individual Arab voices that he uses to structure the narrative--ordinary people, intellectuals, activists and political leaders--provide a much needed insider perspective, which nuances stereotypical images of the Arab world in the media. Moreover, The Arabs discloses unfamiliar and unsettling truths on the vexed and often over-simplified relationship between the Arab world and its historical 'others,' Europe, the west and Israel. Compelling as it is in its own right, this is indeed food for thought also for its relevance to world affairs at large."―BBC History Magazine

OK, this book is long. But so is the history of the Middle East. This book provides clear, insightful perspective into a very complex region that commands a certain understanding given its impact on the modern life. I highly recommend this book; I'm reading it for the second time and will probably read it a third as well. It's that detailed, and like any comprehensive historical treatment it's in the re-reads that you begin to piece together the key events that this book does such a great job of placing into a modern context.

A more-than-thorough history (500+ pages) of the Arab people from the defeat of the Mamluks by the Ottomans in 1516 until the present day. Eugene Rogan is an excellent writer, and despite its length, the book is not stuffy, boring or hard to read. Especially when you get to the modern era, which dominates the latter half of the book, Rogan is amazingly evenhanded and non-judgemental -- this is particularly impressive when you consider he is dealing with topics like the Arab-Israeli conflict and Palestinian rights and religious/sectarian conflicts in Lebanon and Syria. The book certainly added to my understanding of the current conflicts in the Middle East and how intractable the situation is.I have one major complaint: the book needs an easily referred to, serious timeline. Because the book generally covers topics in a regional manner, it is hard to relate what is happening in Egypt, say, at the time of Sadat's assassination, with what is going on in Lebanon (civil war) or the Iraq-Iran war. A good timeline would increase my rating to 5-stars.And as much as I liked this book and learned a lot, I have to say, I liked his other book, The Fall of the Ottomans, even more.

The author seems to be confused between the 'Arabs' and the 'Arabized' peoples of Greater Syria, Iraq and Egypt which this book is mostly about. The author himself points to events where the inhabitants of these regions could not wait to rid themselves of the last repressive Arab ruler when they openly collaborated with and helped the Ottoman Turks defeat the last of the so called Arab rulers "The Mamluks".The beginning of the book is excellent but as you get closer to the middle the book becomes totally disjointed and the materials presented become irrelevant to the main thesis of the book. In short this book is not about the Arabs, it is about the Arabized peoples of the Middle East whom many historians inadvertently insult their rich history, culture and contribution to humanity by referring to them as Arabs.

First the bad: it should be titled “The Arabs: From Ottoman rule to the 21st Century”, beacause that’s where it starts. Nothing about the origins of the ethnicity, the rise of Islam or the Arab conquest and subsequent empire. Also, it more or less downplays the defects of Arab societies and governments. It seemed to me that the author was assuming that readers were well aware of the faults of Arab culture through history, and he was endeavoring, though not fanatically so, to show a Western reader the flip side. That said, to me it was a worthwhile read. Informative without being overwhelmingly so, well written in a flowing style, not in the dry, technical language of the professional historian.

Very thorough and informative. A bit confusing with all the names. Could have used a glossary of names at beginning of chapters and maybe timelines ad well to keep what was happening in various countries at same time.

A thorough and decently readable history of the Arab culture. I would call this a "modern" history as it starts in what most would consider modern history, however that was all OK with me. The last third of the book is heavily based around the Arab/Israeli conflict, perhaps rightly, but that should be known to prospective readers. Given the difficulty of summarizing modern Arab history in less than 600 pages, it is not surprising that certain parts of the Arab world will be given less of a focus, but I was surprised with the lack of pretty much any ink devoted to the Arabian peninsula other than Saudi Arabia. Overall, a very in depth and necessary read.

Cost and Choice is a short, easy, and informative read on opportunity cost. Some of the classical economists hinted at the idea of opportunity cost. Opportunity cost thinking can be seen in the work of Ricardo and Bastiat. Yet the labor cost doctrine held its sway over economic thinking until Carl Menger demolished it. Menger's student Weiser developed the idea of alternative costs, but how did this idea get to England?Buchanan describes the development of the `London tradition' at the LSE. Thirlby, Coase, Hayek, and Robbins were all involved in developing the modern opportunity cost doctrine. Buchanan also inquires into the idea of social costs and public choice. The idea of opportunity cost is, of course, at the center of the socialist calculation debate. The opportunity cost concept raises a number of issues as far as the Coase theorem and public goods theory are concerned. Who chooses over what alternatives in the public sector?Cost and Choice is a great book to use in undergraduate microeconomics. Some grad students should read it too: especially those who majored in engineering or one of the physical sciences as undergrads. It is also a worthwhile read for the educated public.

Brilliant thinking and well written

I am not an economist, but do have a masters degree in political science. As such, I am relatively familiar with cost theory in economics and reasonably familiar with the "Austrian school" of economics's subjective theory of value/cost. Even though I am not an economist, I found this book (except for the final two chapters) quite clearly written and explained. Buchanan certainly isn't writing for a popular audience (and it is not a popular subject), but his writing was easy enough for me to understand without a full-on econ background. As others mention, this book explains and expands on the subjective theory of costs. Simply stated, economists of the classical sort liked to think of 'cost' and 'value' in objective terms - 'cost' referring to the measurable expenditure. Thus, the opportunity cost for buying a candy bar is simply all of the other financial options the buyer forgoes in spending that money here, rather than another place.Buchanan's book first recaps the history of thinking about cost and the gradual emergence of a subjective theory of cost. Under the subjective theory that Buchanan endorses, cost means basically any opportunity that buyer anticipates giving up for sake of the choice being made. In other words, instead of the cost of a candy bar being limited to anything else the buyer could have bought for the price, it can also include such things as the anticipated disappointment when one weighs oneself the following morning or the dissatisfaction that comes with knowing that one broke their diet. So as not to sound frivolous, the reason these are actual costs is because, in a very real way, they are things the chooser considers when making their choice. As the very word 'choice' implies that there is a weighing of pros and cons, any 'cons' that the chooser anticipates are opportunity costs. As other reviewers mention, I am not sure how necessary the last two chapters were. They are quite hard to follow and seemed more suited to a separate essay where themes from this book are put into practical contexts. All in all, Cost and Choice gave me a lot to think about. Buchanan is a good explainer and arguer and provides a very rich history of the evolution of "opportunity cost" as a concept. Good book for those interested in the subjective theory of cost and the microeconomic idea of opportunity cost in general.

The word "cost" means something different in a context of making a choice than it does in a context of budgeting or in a context of accounting. Buchanan argues that within the context of making a choice, orthodox economics employs an inaccurate meaning of the word cost. This book is an attempt to develop the correct meaning of the concept of cost within a context of choice.Buchanan defines cost as "that which the decision-taker sacrifices or gives up when he makes a choice. It consists in his own evaluation of the enjoyment or utility that he anticipates having to forego as a result of selection among alternative courses of action" (p. 41).Buchanan's notion of cost within a setting of choice is one of opportunity cost. His argument builds on the concept of cost developed in Austrian economics (Carl Menger, E. Böhm-Bawerk, F. von Wieser), and even more so by scholars at the London School of Economics (Lionel Robbins, Friedrich A. von Hayek, Ronald Coase during the 1930s, G.F. Thirlby and Jack Wiseman during the 1950s). It differs from the notion of cost of classical economists (Adam Smith, David Ricardo, Thomas Malthus) in two main ways.* In classical and neoclassical economics, cost is based on units of resource input during the production process (ch. 1). The value of goods in exchange is then determined by the relative costs of their production (Adam Smith' famous example that a beaver should fetch twice as much in the market as a deer, because it costs twice as much labor to kill a beaver as it costs to kill a deer). Buchanan, on the other hand, defines cost as that given up when making a choice. He prefers marginal-utility economics (cf. William Stanley Jevons, Carl Menger, Leon Walras), according to which exchange value is determined by marginal utility, or demand.* In classical economics, cost can be objectively measured. Under the Austrian-London-Buchanan concept of cost, on the other hand, cost is subjective, in that it is different for each decision maker (p. 23). "In an unchanging economic environment populated by purely economic men, the two approaches become identical in a superficial sense. In a universe where all behavior is not purely economic, where genuine choice takes place, the important differences emerge with clarity." (p. 25)Thus, "[i]n a theory of choice, cost must be reckoned in a utility dimension. In the orthodox predictive theory, however, cost is reckoned in a commodity dimension." (p. 41)Short as the book is, it could have been even shorter. Lots of the second half is barely interesting (ch. 4-6, which are applications of Buchanan's cost theory to, respectively, public finance, Pigovian welfare norms, and nonmarket decision-making; sounds promising but it simply gets too tedious). This would have worked better in a shorter, long paper-length version.
